Benvenuti was ratedNo.45 by the ring mag in a list the best 50 P4P fighters of the last 50 years in 1996, Cervantes was rated No.46 in the same list, but which these two was better P4P in their respective primes?

    Nino info:
    Quality of competition: 8
Bouts vs top 50 fighters: 3
Why he wa on the list: Won his first 65 bouts and two titles, and beat Emile Griffith 2 out 3.
What he could have done to better his ranking: Won the middleweight title earlier in his career. Then he would have missed out on Carlos Monzon.

    Cervantes info:
    Quality of competition: 7
Bouts vs top 50 fighters: 2
Why he`s here: Dominated division for almost a decade, and did it mostly on the road.
What he could have done to better his ranking: Lured lightweight champ Roberto Duran into a title fight.

Duran wasn`t a great middle but if you took Duran from the Hagler fight and matched him v prime Nino how would that bout compared Duran meeting Cervantes at 140 while he was a champ at 135?

I don’t see much distinction between the two. But then neither have ever been favorites of mine. Cervantes has made fans of some good posters, though, so I’d say he’s due for a re-visit.

Mark, I love your posts. Merry Christmas.

I think Nino probably beats a MW Duran. 135/140 Duran beats Cervantes clearly IMO.

I think Nino is a little underrated nowadays but Cervantes was better.

Both were great fighters and champions. Nino started out as a 154 pounder, Antonio Kid Pambele was a very good 140 lb champion. Both had a good reign as champions. They defended their titles well, who can forget the Benvenuti vs Emile Griffith encounters. Cervantes holds a victory over Esteban De Jesus in 1975. Cervantes lost his WBA 140 lb title to 17 year old Wilfred Benitez in 1976, by split decision in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Antonio then lost his title to Aaron Pryor on August 2 1980, TKO 2, in Detroit, Michigan.. Nino Benvenuti lost his World Middleweight Title on Nov 7 1970 to Carlos Monzon, KO 12, in Rome, Italy, then lost a rematch to Carlos on May 9 1971, in Monte Carlo, Monaco, TKO 3.

if we’re talking pound for pound ....Antonio Cervantes was a much better fighter at 140 then Benvenuti was at 160 .....there aren’t too many 140lbers I see beating Cervantes....I can’t say the same about Benvenuti

Benvenuti was at his very best at 154.

Cervantes still better but 154 is Nino's best.

Kid Pambele..still catches heat for losing to a prodigy in Benitez but regardless still a superb craftsman. An excellent Champion

Of all the fights I watched in 2020, one of the most impressive to me was Cervantes' destruction of Fraser (Frazier?). He just overwhelmed the guy. Nino was excellent too, but Cervantes for me.
