The guy has only 2 KO vs 8 submission victories on his resume. He got a recent TKO victory against Nogueira but in his fights since then he has really tried to force his once unknown standup game. This most notably in fights with Carwin and the second Lesnar brawl. In the Lesnar fight he thought he could dominate the much taller Lesnar on his feet eventually getting nailed put down and pummeled. In the case of Carwin I truly believe if Mir had stuck to his technical ground game of submissions he could have come out on top. Instead he chose to stand and clinch eventually getting nailed put down and pummeled. Did Nogueira convince Mir he was a standup force? Has this transition caused him to lose fights he should have won by fighting HIS fight? Was his game plan suicide standing with a taller guy and a guy who is just plain big time puncher?
Mir didnt get nailed then put down by Lesnar. Mir caught Lesnar with an elbow and a couple of knees but tried to be Urijah Faber or something with a jumping knee and fell flat on his bat with his head agianst the cage. Mir dropped Kongo before choking him out. Mir got KOed by a murderous puncher in Shane Carwin thats the only bad thing thats happened to him standup wise in his last 3 fights.
I think your post is a really un educated version of what you see actually happened :deal Mir's stand up is no joke , are you forgetting he dropped Cheick Kongo in the opening exchange of there fight , this is Cheick Kongo the seasoned kick boxer who's stand up is one of the very best in the world @HW let alone the UFC's HW division. Ok secondly on the Big Nog fight , yes i agree with you it did flatter to decieve , why ???? because Big Nog was operating @60% of what you'd normally see him in the cage , he looked slow , sluggish , chinny and his timing was way off and Mir picked him apart and subsequently stopped him , looks great on the resume but we all know that wasnt the real Nog , hence the call for a re match right now , both are off the back of TKO losses and like i say that wasnt the real Nog . (Staph infection incase your wondering) Ok Lesnar 2 , where did Mir get nailed and put down as you put it ?????? , Frank Mir was giving Lesnar fits in the 2nd round with his stand up , Lesnar was all over the place didnt know what to do with Mir's movement and faints , look at Brock's body language in the stand up exchange he was way out of his depth , he nearly got nearly KO'd with a right elbow and a flying knee in the clinch , where Mir was subsequently taken down as he knee'd Lesar with the his standing foot . Ok the last and most ridiculous of your points " In the case of Carwin I truly believe if Mir had stuck to his technical ground game of submissions he could have come out on top " just where , when and how do you see Frank Mir taking Carwin down ??????? :huh:huh , how do you see a man naturally 20lb's lighter than Carwin (im talking naturally not Frank's current blown up un natural frame of 270) and truly 2 or 3 levels below him in wrestling ability taking this man down keeping him there and tapping him ??? the best and only chance Mir had of submitting Carwin is to a) tap him from his back , now given Carwins wrestling top game and G & P ability forget that one , or b) if Mir hurt him on his feet and followed up with a submission ala Kongo !!!!!!! Frank Mir is a well rounded fighter with very good stand up and excellent JJ , his weakness is his wrestling and his size for the current crop of HW's especially when facing a big wrestler like Carwin , Lesnar , Velasquez etc etc , people just cant accept that Mir has evolved , and his stand up is a big part of this evolution , they look at Mir from 10 years ago ripping off Tim Sylvia's arm and the Mir who got brutally KO'd by Brandon Vera and think he cant fight on the feet when actually he ****ing can :deal , and his stand up is one of the best in the division now , stand up alone would you give Mir a chance with , Big Nog , Velasquez , Carwin , Lesnar , Barnett , Werdum , Arlovski ???? i know i would .
I'm convinced that Mir loses the presence of mind to change position. Despite all his talk he freezes up alot. You can't let guys like Carwin and Lesnar pin and pound you EVEN with short punches like that. Those guys have incredibly heavy hands.
Mirs arrogance has never belied his confidence. He reminds me of Bruno in that when he hurt he hasnt got a clue what to do and just gets smashed. Bottom line is his standup vs Nog was vastly overrated by himself and his fans. Nog is a shadow of the fighter he once was. If Mir had any common sense instead of playing to his big ego he would have worked on what he does best which is submit guys on the mat. Instead he put on 20lbs of nothing and thought he could trade with guys like Lesnar and Carwin. Bad mistake. But nothing unsual as Mir's career has always blown hot and cold. The guys simply not as good as his made out to be.
I suppose I agree to an extent. Mir's stand-up has definitely improved and will be valuable against guys like Lesnar etc whose stand-up is less than stellar. However I have a feeling he is falling into the idea that his stand-up will be the best tool to use against anyone, instead of sticking to his bread and butter and that will prove fatal. He's not the only one either. Guys like Koscheck, Evans etc have done the same and been found out.
The Nog win did flatter him. Nog is SO ****ING SLOW. Nog beat Couture cos he is EVEN MORE ****ING SLOW. Mir is a decent technical boxer. He did counter hook Carwin. Mir should be use his strikes to set up his ground game which is wear he is strongest.
And Couture beat Coleman because he is EVEN MORE ****IN SLOW ahahah. nog, couture and coleman have pathetic handspeed. They are ooolllddd.
The worst thing that happened to Mir was the motorcycle accident - it cost him several years, when talent in the UFC heavyweight division was pretty scarce and he could've conceivably run roughshod (should he have gotten past Couture) for about 5 years before the bigger, stronger new guys showed up to use their size/wrestling to simply out man him. His biggest problem now is that those big guys are skilled enough (well, Lesnar is NOW) to understand how to minimize Mir's bjj and use body control to just physically overwhelm him.
