Was part of the reason Cotto performed poorly against Clottey in 2009, and by poorly, he didn't look like his crisp, strong self, was part of the reason because making weight was taking a toll on him?

After all, in 2010 he was fighting for the Jr.MW title.

I know Clottey is good, but I never considered him an A level fighter like Cotto, yet Cotto struggled against Clottey, but I couldn't see what Clottey was doing to make Cotto look less than spectacular, I thought the Margarito fight had just ruined him, but after the Mayweather fight, it seems it was likely weight and perhaps his bad camp.

Why did Cotto struggle against Clottey?

Give Clottey some credit. He whipped that boy's ass and we all know it.

Cotto isn't an A level fighter...He's proven that by being beaten by every A level fighter he's fought....and neither were really close.

I'd like to give Clottey credit for pumping a great jab & landing good combo's when he decided to throw. Too bad he decides to turtle 80% of the time.

Very possible Cotto could have been troubled by outside distractions.
But Let's not discredit Joshua's effort again when he threw shots.
^****en guy will always baffle me...

I think like Freddy said, it was the huge cut he suffered, as well as not having a proper trainer. IMO

True... For a second during the in-between RDs (Post cut) I was almost convinced Miguel didn't want to continue.

Clottey defo blew it. (Story of his career tho)

Looked like a simple case of being under trained to me. He was totally gassed by the middle rounds and his punches looked no where near as sharp and fast as they usually are.

Cotto was at his worse mentally during 2009, and having his friend Joe Santiago as his head trainer didn't make things any better, the training footage when Cotto was training under Santiago was pathetic to say the least.

Not to get off subject but Team Pacquiao knew this and targeted Cotto for a fight, Pac and his team didn't target Cotto cause he looked good against Clottey, they targeted him for a fight cause he looked bad and vulnerable against Clottey.

I do believe he was trying to come in as light as possible knowing if he won,he would have Pacquiao next @145.But I think there were several reasons for his below par performance:
when an unbeaten fighter loses,it has them over thinking things. Now the know they can lose and fight more cautiously.
The cut he suffered was a pretty bad one and had to have hindered him
Clottey deserves some credit for his style is difficult for fighters and add that to cutting weight,no way can a fighter be at his best.

Clottey beat the dog **** out of Cotto. Fact is at 147 Cotto was never elite and he sure as hell isn't elite at 154, no matter what trainer he gets. Which is why he won't fight anyone worth a damn in the division except the one legged rabbi.

Did you happen to miss that massive gash on Cotto's eye? The one obscuring his vision for the remainder of the fight? Big turning point, that. One that played a huge factor in his performance.
