He didn't look spectacular because he was still trying to make a decent fight out of it and Clottey didn't play along. Cotto could have sat back and jabbed a bit and as soon as Clottey slightly opens up, get the heck outta there en route to boring UD. Instead his eyes lit up when Clottey decided to throw back and thought a fight was about to break out, and took some unnecessary shots. Sometimes winning isn't everything and you still want to entertain the paying customers.

And he fell short, does that mean we should define him based on that one fight and completely ignore the rest?

I had clottey up by one point at the endow the tenth round, but after that it almost seemed like he got scared of cotto again and cotto was able to win the last two rounds easily

Cotto was not in a good place mentally and his peparation suffered from having his buddy train him. But mostly I think you can chalk it down to the brutal cut and Cotto not being the type of warrior who can just ignore it and proceed with business as usual.

At this point in Cotto's career, he was struggling to make 147. That, combined with the cut on his eye led to a subpar performance

Stop looking for excuses. Cotto struggled against Clottey because he was suffering a major cut and facing a tough, strong opponent. No other reasons. Give Clottey some credit, he was a good fighter at his best, and Cotto doesn't have the speed or the power to dominate or stop a guy like him.

cotto was dominating margacheato too quite comfortably until the bricks became way too much. cotto dominates fighters of clotteys level. he def looked like someone who wasnt himself and /or weightdrained.

Clottey is always going to be a tough fight for Miguel.

At 154 this would be a pick em battle

Al Bernstein said Clottey broke both of his hands???

I thought Clottey did well against Marg but i dont think he ever would have beaten him prime for prime

Struggled because Clottey was a top level welterweight. Cotto was at the same level as Clottey.

Balls. Cotto wasn't dominating Margarito, he was outboxing him on the move but it was always going to even out later in the fight when Miguel got tired, even if Margo wasn't packing cement. Cotto had to go to war to get past Ricardo Torres and Zab Judah, are you going to blame that on "not being himself" as well?

Clottey showed in his fights with Margarito, Judah, Corrales, Baldomir and Cotto that he was a very tough and very competent fighter at world level.
