Floyd threw 39 punches in the 1st round against Cotto, I was comparing it to the fact that Whitaker threw 82 punches in the 3rd round of his bout vs Ramirez when he won their rematch but Mayweather`s sharpness was far better than Whitaker`s here.
Would Pernell being a high volume puncher than Floyd have helped him in a fight betweenthe two in their primes and did he on average throw more shots?

This inquiry is not in question. It is a simple fact. Pernell Whitaker was dramatically more busy than Floyd Mayweather. The stats you quoted were common for both. Pernell threw roughly twice as many punches per round as Floyd did. Combined with his excellent defense (and the fact that Floyd has literally zero chance of stopping Pernell), this punch disparity would lead Whitaker to a clear decision win over Floyd.

I think Floyd takes the decision here. I don’t think Whitaker was his best initiating exchanges (not the Floyd is either), and think he would adopt that role. Yes Pea was the busier fighter, but so were nearly all of Floyd’s opponents until they fought him and struggled with his defense and counter punching. I think Whittaker’s out put and accuracy (although being fair so does Floyd’s) decline in this match.

Close fight that could go either way and maybe sd or md. I think Floyd would outpoint him 7-5 or so in a fight reminiscent of Hopkins and RJJ 1. Both fighters tentative early and taking few risks.

If they’re tentative early Pea’s jab is the difference

Many became tentative because of Floyd’s sharp counters, as well as his ability to control and slow them down on the inside. Whitaker a better fighter in close than anyone Floyd fought, and tough as ****, a real spiteful ******* so even though Floyd can earn a bit of respect from him, Pea can adapt and was not easily dissuaded.

Whitaker 7-5 kinda’ decision, I think he has a slightly larger toolbag to delve into for this particular matchup, despite me thinking Floyd’s aversion to southpaws being a complete myth.

Don't know how much you can read into it but apparently Floyd got the better of Pernell when Floyd was an amateur and they sparred.

When Pernell talks about it he refers to it as him helping May's style and it was light work. "I'm not going in there to hurt or KO some young prospect Kid, I was giving him pointers". This was an out of training Whitaker as well.
