Was Pernell Whitaker really that good?

Pernell was awesome As amazing as his footwork was, waist movement while ducking and slipping, were unreal, dude was a contortionist. I remember hearing an interview with him on the radio, before the DeLahoya fight, about a drill he did as a kid to learn his moves, that they would mark a small square in the ring barely larger than his 3 feet and he wasn't allowed to move his feet out side them, while the trainer threw punches from angles and he would have to adjust. Though I don't think that kind of elusiveness can be taught.

I don't think he won the De La Hoya, fight, but he did make him look really silly, and that was at the very tailend of his career.

 

I see Mayweather vs Whitaker a 50-50 fight. It's one of those fights you can't honestly predict. There's so many ways it can go down it's ridiculous!

 

Apparently there is a video of them sparring when Floyd was an amature. Hes recording all his sparring sessions to be released upon his retirement....

Because of his reach Floyds just gonna tuck his chin behind his shoulder and pick Pernell off when he tries those combinations u guys like so much! Ask Marquez how trying to counter punch a bigger faster quicker guy works! lol You dudes are severely underestimating Floyds foot speed and quickness! Floyd will get in and out stealing shots and Pernell will get mad and aggressive because that's who he is! And when he does that it will be Over! It will look like Mayweather Marquez but the rounds will be harder to score. Floyd wins 8-4!

I'm with u on that for sure. Nothing is a given in this sport but I'd favor Pea as well. I also agree with Foot and swimmer being 2 other boxers who style and skills frustrate their opponents.

Sweet Pea was just amazing...One of the most complete boxers to have ever stepped in the ring...and would school everyone today from his weight divisions.
