Was Pernell Whitaker really that good?

Very close fight, but Sweet Pea wont take or be stupid enough to take Floyds potshots or fight Floyds fight hed force Floyd into a war just like he did to his uncle. Hed attack Floyds body too and Im sure plenty of wrestling and fouling and smacktalk. A past his prime Sweet Pea impressed me more than a prime Floyd against Oscar whom they both fought and Sweet Pea fought a much better version. Oscar escaped wirh a draw while some think Floyd barely beat a past his prime Oscar. Pea fought Chavez, Oscar, Nelson, and Tito 4 legends those are beasts compared to anything Floyd has fought.

 

if my boy bball admits it, then it's definitely true. i wasn't sure if you could go against floyd. glad to be wrong. but i will be in the minority and say that it will be even. it's a reason why no matter who you put in front of him it's an absolute mismatch. I say 50/50

Whitaker was an amazing, amazing fighter.

This is coming from someone who was a huge Chavez fan and who was disgusted when their fight was ruled a draw.

Sweat Pea was the truth. Never really lost, cleanly IMO, until the Trinidad fight in 1999. He was 35 years old then, fighting an unbeaten welterweight force of nature.

Floyd is known to frustrate other fighters, who have a hard time hitting him or stopping his offense. But, Whitaker is probably one of the few fighters, in recent memory, with the skill set that might actually frustrate Floyd in the ring, IMO.

I think Whitaker could outbox Floyd and win a close but clear decision.

I remember you saying before that you consider Floyd an ATG because you made money off of him in some bets, not sure if you were being sarcastic there... but research? It's not like you are having to use algorithms to predict upcoming financial trends... I mean when has Floyd not been a huge betting favorite? The last fight may have been Corrales where he was the under. That may have been the only fight in his professional career he wasn't the large betting favorite.

Even Floyd couldn't do that to an older DLH yet he's supposedly the better offesive fighter, counter puncher, and stronger of the two.

 

People saying pete couldnt punch is wrong!...he was a very, very sharp puncher!..he just had a pure boxers mentality he would gain control over you and keep you there for 12 rnds. To me floyd vs pete would be a pick em fight tho.

 

He was really that good. He was as skilled and effective as ANY other fighter to ever pull on a pair of boxing gloves IMO. Watch his 2nd fight with Buddy McGirt and his fight with Greg Haugen. This was a special, special fighter, clearly superior to Floyd in pretty much every way.

 

And he had a broken jaw.
