Watch footage of his fights, and you'll see someone with just as much speed and power as Tyson. He wasn't as aggressive a fighter most of the time, but he was still dangerous.
Louis didn't have more speed than tyson, he was more mythodical and threw every shot from almost a perfect technical viewpoint but it was never faster than tyson, mike had explosive handspeed that louis never had. Louis may have been a better all round puncher though [yt]WPQlNhGMlGQ[/yt] [yt]A6gQ75_PLh8&feature=related[/yt]
I definitely think there were instances where Louis's handspeed, when he opens up, is as impressive as Tyson's. I agree that he was more inclined to methodically set those punches up, but his combos also tended to be more varied than Tyson's were. By contrast, there were times when Tyson would just shoeshine you with a flurry of punches. I think their speed was comparable, with Louis being the more careful puncher and Tyson more aggressive.
Louis certainly had more varied combinations and his punches are technically fantastic, straight, true and accurate, almost perfect. However i don't see there speed being particuarly comparable, louis handspeed in general is underrated in my opinion, it was quicker than a lot of people give him credit for being, but i've never seen any footage where i fell he was tysonlike quick, tyson was explosivy quick a quality i never felt louis possesed
I think Louis launches single shots at a speed which was comparable to a Tyson. Tyson was more likely to let his hands go, rather than looking to carefully set up the knockout. I think when you consider this with his aggression he tends to look more impressive. But, I think if he took Louis's approach to throwing them, he would likely appear slower as well. I also don't believe all the punches Tyson threw were take your head off kinds of punches all the time. Sometimes announcers would label it "shoeshining." He sometimes moved his hands very quickly, but the power wasn't always in all of the punches. I also wonder about the difference that his early knockout approach had on his level of fatigue and hand speed compared to Joe, but that may be a stretch. There's no question both were devastating. But, I think Louis definitely is one of the fastest heavyweight punchers ever.
At single punches louis is very quick, i agree with that, however tyson would jump in and lead with hooks at times from distance, like a jones would and that takes insane hand speed to pull off, something i don' think louis could do. You do also make a good point about louis throwing his weight behind every shot, looking to cause damage, robinson was the same, an that does slow your handspeed down instead of flurrying, however tyson was very similar in that account, i don't really think he threw many pitter patter shots like you do to be honest. Anyway we will have to agree to disagree on this one, louis did have quick hands, but as fast as mike, i just don't see it :good
Mike was the greatest, man had speed, power, and believe it or not some nice defense. Have you not seen that man's weave game?
Joe Louis wasn't fast at all. He had decent hand speed, but his feet were stuck in mud. The Bum of the Month club has been very very good to his legacy. Tyson knocks out any version of Max Schmeling in his freaking pro debut, 100% of the time.
No, Tyson was the fastest HW ever imo! he is only 5`11 quite massive and have shorter reach than most fighters from MW to HW, so it makes his handspeed extremly fast!
Nope... his hands were damn fast. Quit unheard of for a heavyweight fighter with his build. He also had fast foot speed and very quick upper body defensive reflexes for an aggressive fighter.
Yes, his hand speed was very good, but not as quick as most people make out. His agility and explosiveness were phenomenal, but his handspeed is a little overrated.
This is a beautiful thing here... look at that head movement - weaving under shots and coming up with severe power in quick combinations. How can ANYONE think Wlad or Vitaly could keep him away for 12 rounds??
