I probably shouldn't, I just couldn't be bothered with him.

This. Carnera is seriously being underrated. Carnera actually fought good competition compared to a lot of guys that came after him. Also, Carnera struggled with skilled small guys that were experienced, but had no problem with guy like Briggs and would've flattened him with his uppercut. Briggs couldn't even convincingly beat a 48 year old Foreman, who was completely shot at that stage and was cherry picking his opponents very carefully, since even he knew he had nothing left.

Briggs in his prime getting flattened by Wilson.

Carnera was a hyped, mob controlled fighter who had a few of his wins arranged for him, a musclebound acromeliac case who couldn't punch his weight and couldn't take a good shot.

For all that, he does have tangible accomplishments.

He was not a one hit wonder, who won the title, and accomplished very little else at world level.

He did not lift the crown off a title shot that he was gifted.

If Sharkey had beaten him in the second fight, he would be the standout as the best heavyweight of the era, who never held the title.

His resume has genuine depth to it.

All of this puts clear blue water between him, and fighters like Briggs or Spinks.

His manager said over 30 of his fights were pre-arranged ,that isn't a few.
Let's be clear, head to head you pick Carnera to beat Briggs?

His former manager was about as far from being a reliable witness as you can get.

There are probably half a dozen people on this forum, who could have dismantled him on the witness stand.
    Yes I would.

It would not be a particularly confident pick, but I would go with Carnera's deeper body of form.

    Does it really matter though?

If you thought that Shannon Briggs could beat Floyd Patterson, you are still not going to argue that Patterson was the worst lineal champion of them all.

He wasn’t taking his career seriously at all when he lost to Fields and McCline; McClind probably would’ve beaten him regardless. His experience level was basically nothing when he lost to Wilson. His prime was basically Foreman-Botha, with a mid 2000s comeback where he probably was a little better than before due to knowing how to pace himself.

Patterson would beat Carnera like he was his Daddy.

Matter? Not to me, I have my opinion, you have yours.
I would prefer not to spend excessive time on him because, simply put, he does not warrant,it!

I think Carnera would’ve beat Neon Leon, so no.

Of random belt holders, Charles Martin and Charr are the worst of all time IMO

Briggs would take out his iPhone and zap Carnera away for a TKO stoppage.

What we talking about here? Accomplishments as a champion or a straightforward h2h comparison?

We keep coming back to who would beat him, which we can't really prove either way.

Would you at least accept that his resume was better than those of a number of lineal champions?
