Was Rampage-Machida a good example of why boxing's 10-point system doesn't suit MMA?

I think you have to consider that the 10 point must system is not just to find a winner but also to encourage a better spectacle for the fans. If a guy could just backpeddle and land 1 or 2 shots in a round but avoid all incoming strikes he could win a fight but the sport would suffer. It does lead to some unsatisfactory decisions now and then but it forces fighters to engage. There has to be some motivation to be agressive otherwise fights could just be stand offish sparring matches and a coin toss on the scorecards.

 

Yes and no. However you look at it, a fight is a war broken up into battles. Rampage won 2 battles and Machida won 1. He has only himself to blame for doing so little in the first 2 rounds. Rampage didn't do much better but in such a fight you've got to favour the aggressor who is trying to take your head off unless you can land a couple of sweet counters to make it look like you've got the ring generalship.
