It sure did seem that way. For a fighter to throw his title in a trash can to avoid his mandatory challenge, I would say yes.

Just wondering, I've heard a lot about this but never seen it. Is there a video of him throwing it away?

No self-respecting man would have done what he did, if he wasn't afraid.

No he wasn´t. Bowe actually tried several times to make a fight with Lewis but Lewis walked away from it

No, Bowe was not, but Rock Newman was and Rock controlled Bowe on all things from A to Z, 100 times over.

In November 1992 he fought reigning champ [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evander_Holyfield"]Evander Holyfield[/ame] for the undisputed title. With his heart and dedication still in question, Bowe won a unanimous decision in an entertaining fight, even flooring Holyfield in the 11th. However, it was the 10th round that most boxing fans will remember. The epic and brutal back and forth exchanges helped make it Ring Magazine's "[ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ring_Magazine_round_of_the_year"]Round of the Year[/ame]". Commentator Al Bernstein exclaimed, "That was one of the best heavyweight rounds ever!"
Only a couple of weeks earlier in London, Bowe's old Olympic rival [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lennox_Lewis"]Lennox Lewis[/ame] knocked out Canadian [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donovan_Ruddock"]Donovan "Razor" Ruddock[/ame] in 2 rounds, establishing himself as the WBC's #1 contender. The Bowe/Holyfield and Lewis/Ruddock fights were part of a mini-tournament where all 4 fighters agreed that the two winners would meet each other for the championship. Bowe's manager Rock Newman made a proposal that the $32million purse HBO were offering be split 90-10 in Bowe's favor, an "absurd" offer which Lewis rejected.[5] Lewis's manager Frank Maloney rejected another offer of $2million for Lewis to fight on a Bowe undercard, citing his distrust of the Bowe camp after the aforementioned negotiations.

Rock Newman was a racist ****. I still remember when he brought over Pierre Coetzer and tried to bring up out of nowhere that they were part of the actual racist group controlling South Africa at the time, at the press conference about the FIGHT.

A truly disgusting man Rock Newman was.
