He has the flash and he was a star. That does not make a fighter elite in skills mentally and physically and you guys know that just like I do. He was not ready for Duran if he fought his fight because Duran called his wife a name or things like that.
8 say Duran was not elite? That is surprising. He was elite for sure. I don't understand the polls, but that is why polls come out unpredictably.
I understand that many think Duran is overrated. I suppose I agree (even if he is one of my favourite boxers). I don't think he's a lock for top 5 p4p as many claim. But... elite?! Surely that's an obvious 'yes', isn't it? He must be a lock for p4p top 10/15, surely? That's elite! Otherwise, what constitutes 'elite'?
I don't think he's a lock for top 15 all-time pound-for-pound. I don't even think he's a lock for top 5 lightweight of all-time, although I'd probably put him there and have no problem with him being #1. But he's certainly "elite" by any reckoning. Elite can't just mean the top 10 or top 20 all-time boxers p4p ever.
I I agree with you completely. People generally regard 'elite' as meaning 'one of the best in the world within his time.' That's a fair definition. Sorry, I probably just articulated it wrong. What I meant to say was that, even if people have this ultra-strict, non-realistic, definition of 'elite,' Duran still is. He's elite by any definition. Hope that clarifies my position.
Yes, if Duran is not considered an 'elite', then no boxer should be and we needn't ever apply the word to boxing and boxers again.
