Duran beat Marcel, Palomino, Kobayashi, Buchanan, Dejesus, Lampkins, Cuevas, Bizarro, Castro, Gonzales, Barkley and Ray Leonard

Was the lightweight champ for like a decade. How stupid are people in here? He started boxing when he was like 120 lbs. a 120 lb'er eventually won a middleweight title.

Now before you run to boxrec, just because you've never seen any of these guys fight before doesn't mean they weren't good wins.

Okay so the bottom line appears to be that Duran is frequently out of shape between fights, Leonard knew this and scheduled a rematch, which is basically what the posters you criticise are saying. All you've done is confirm what Leonard himself said.

    Bravo, great job.

I wouldn't expect you to get the point. You have long shown yourself to be a ringleader of the Duran Mythologizer army. The point stands for the non delusional posters here, though.

I like to think I'm fairly neutral on Duran despite your comment. I also consider you one of the most knowledgeable posters on this site.

I'm watching what to me is the best fight I've ever seen which is Barkley - Duran and just finished watching the fourth round. I've been watching boxing since I was about 8 and I'm 51 now, so I know what I like. Whether you agree or disagree with my assessment of various fighters, doesn't much bother me.

To add to this, the trait I value most in a boxer is heart and skill, and to me Duran display's this as much as any fighter who ever fought, others may value different traits and that's their prerogative. But the bottom line is that Duran had more ups than most ATG's and more downs, so where you rate him largely depends on what you focus on.

Good post. I'm a Quarry fan for many of the same reasons that you are a Duran fan. Obviously, I'm not putting Jerry Boy on Duran's level, I'm simply saying that they were both flawed individuals who had ups and downs but never failed to inspire fans with the ups.
For example, how in the hell did a binge drinking pill popper beat guys like Foster, Lyle and Shavers...all after being written off by the public?

you really are proving what others (including srl) are saying. duran's abilities are unquestioned, neither is his lack of professionalism.

Honestly calling this man overrated is by far the dumbest thing that has ever been said on these boards !

He is one of the best boxers ever. His raw energy from his youth developed into masterful controlled aggression which was great to watch.

His passionate character was well reflected in his boxing style and he has a great resume.

Just because you haven't heard of them, doesn't mean they were nobodies.

sweetpea is far more deserving of the title great than duran...for one thing, sweetpea beat at least 4 guys who would have beat duran... azumah nelson, buddy mcgirt, julio cesar chavez and delahoya...even though he got robbed against dlh, he deserved the decision.

so, besides being a 4 division champ, sweetpea's resume is far better than duran's.

pacman would have scarfed duran down like scramled eggs and hash browns...duran's reckless aggressive style was made to order.

He didn't deserve the decision against Oscar had he focused more on offense than defense maybe but his lack of offense cost him

Pacquiao-Duran would have been one of the greatest ever action fights.
