Was Roland LaStarza a good fighter?

    LaStarza came closer than anyone to beating Rocky Marciano. He lost in a split decision to Rocky in 1950. Many observers said LaStarza won it. Rocky TKOd him in 1953 when they met again for the title.

    Had my doubts till I watched him here against a quality opponent at his best. This was a good fight and he doesn’t look nearly as off as he did against Marcianos awkward style

    Yes I believe he was seen as a quality contender and was believed to be one of the better defensive fighters of his time. Marciano’s strategy for beating him in the rematch and breaking through Roland’s defense was to hammer away at Lastarza’s arms all night. This led to Roland suffering severe arm damage which rendered him less effective for the rest of his career

    Oh yes ,he was a good fighter, fairly clever, with decent boxing skills , moderate power with a good chin, and a great heart.
