There is this video on youtube that shows an amateur fight where Roy Jones Jr. is facing Frankie Liles. Here is this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Ns_FT8pdeI One of the comments says that he was allegedly knocked out by Frankie Liles in one occasion, but not in the fight shown in the clip.
According to his own recollections in one interview after the 1st loss to Tarver, he was knocked out just once in the amateurs, by one Irishman whose name he didn't remember, supposedly in the USA-Ireland boxing teams meeting. I can't find where I read this interview though. Frank Liles never knocked him out, he only scored one knockdown on him, as Iceman Scully recalled in his write-ups.
I don't live in USA, so I can't access any other next-day Chicago newspapers other than the Tribune for the Dusty Miller bout.
Wow, this thread died on it's arse but it seems pro' Jeff Thomas heard about this as well, he's the OP http://www.boxingforum24.com/showthread.php?t=57846
i think i remember hearing merchant say that gerald mcclellan stopped jones once in the amateurs but i'm not sure if that's true. i know during '86-'87 he jumped up two weight classes and had some losses during that time.
Clean KOs with the referee counting to ten rarely happen in amateur boxing, as far as I know. RSC=referee stops contest I don't know any more details, the info is from secondary source.
yeah, i understand all that, but is the source reliable? I mean, ive no reason to doubt it, im just asking as im curious to hear the hows and whys, plus ive never heard it before (which doesnt mean much, granted). Its just that id know a few guys who boxed for ireland, particularly in the 80s and early 90s and this has never came up before. Again, im not saying it didnt happen, just that i never heard of it before:good EDIT. Could it have been a noel reid?
