Guy was unbelievable. You know your good when people turn against you. Kind of what happened to Roy in his career. Joe calzaghe wouldn't have got near him in his prime.
I am a huge RJJ fan, loved every second of his fights. That said.. and putting my own bias aside... JC would probably beat him at any point in his career. You say he is untouchable, and he was against most opponents, but the counter to extremely good reflexes is very fast hands combined with volume. Both of which JC had in abundance. I think, given that JC had a very good chin, you would have to favor JC in that matchup. JC would out point him. This takes nothing away from RJJ, he is an ATG and no he was not over-rated, but he never during any of his peak career faced someone remotely like JC. When you think about it, you would be hard pressed to find a single SMW or LH that would beat JC in the last 20+ years.
No way would calzaghe have beaten Roy. The two boys are on completely different levels. I d put a bet on calzaghe wouldn,t be throwing punch after punch on Roy. You could,t get the guy to stand still like most calzaghe opponents. Even trying to close the distance on Roy...he,d hit you before you even got close. I m actually British. But one thing Ill do is give guys credit regardless of nationality...or personal bias for or against them. But Roy was a different level to Joe. Joe himself admitted it. Like the rest of Roy's opponents they didn't,t know how to get near him in his prime. He hit hard as well. He,d have stopped calzaghe. Or shut him down and won pretty much every single round. Different levels. Calzaghe was a good fighter tho.
Let’s get the obvious agenda out of the way. Yes Roy would annihilate Golovkin who is a DJ, Canelo level fighter. The guy had to rob Dirrel in the olympics. Go watch the match. Don’t take my word for it. It was pretty obvious. As far as Joe Calzaghe prime for prime just stop. No credible source ranks Calzaghe higher than Roy all time and thats even after the fact Joe beat him. Prime, Roy would’ve ended the fight after the first KD. Coke chin wouldn’t of lasted and his pathetic power would have no effect on Roy if he was even able to land a punch. We get it. Some of you are mad about The Roy/GGG thread from yesterday. It’s okay. Reality can be a *****. If Roy is a hypejob then there’s no question GGG is the absolute most hyped fighter of all time. Joe Calzaghe a close second lmao
This was a near 40 year old gun shy version of Roy, who had diminished reflexes. Joe wasn't a great defensive fighter. He was always relatively easy to hit, especially with right hands. It was one of his biggest weaknesses. Roy did what he had to do to beat Toney. As for the question, no, he isn't overrated. If anything, he's underrated. The versions of Roy from 93-03 would be favoured to beat anybody today from MW-CW.
I don't think Joe would have beaten any pre-HW version of Roy. I also don't believe he'd have possessed the confidence to have gone all out to have tried to have out pointed him.
Why would Joe have probably beaten him? Here's 3 things to consider: 1. If he'd been confident of beating Roy, he'd have really pushed for the fight earlier instead of defending a lightly regarded WBO belt for 10 years in different division, a division where he had to literally starve himself to make weight. 2. Looking back over Joe's career, it's a huge assumption to believe that he'd have gone all out and unloaded huge volume on Roy. 3. If he had've unloaded huge volume on Roy, the chances are, they'd have ended up in a macho shootout. Do you really think Joe would have come out on top? Who did Joe ever fight that came close to Roy? Nobody. As great as Joe was, he was always easy enough to hit. He scraped by Reid, and was on the floor against Mitchell and Salem. Roy had more power, more speed, and was more accurate with a better defence. Joe could possibly have beaten Roy, but it would have been foolish to have favoured him. And saying he probably would have beaten him is based on nothing.
