he was 35 with great mileage. but sure he was responsible for accepting world class level bouts at that stage.
Roy barely got hit. But I know a fighter like Roy, who depends on reflexes, can age quickly. The weight loss didn't help, sure. But that was very sudden, from Ruiz to Tarver he just lost almost everything. I just happen to believe Tarver had more to do with that than a lot of people think. His next loss to Johnson was from Tarver taking his soul and making him hesitant. Someone who fights like Roy can't hesitate. Obviously it didn't help that he was a little older too.
It's not cheating if its not banned by any of the sanctioning bodies and was legal by US law. Infact if there is a bottle out there that turns you into Roy Jones as you claimed("everything good about Roy Jones came out of a bottle") and it was completely legal, then you would be a complete idiot not to take it. Are you going to claim that the average poster on general doesn't have a 2 digit IQ and not even half the knowledge of the average Classic poster? Because we both know that's true whether you like it or not, this section is a hotspot for cheerleaders, not long time boxing fans
Ruiz was never a great HW. But Roy was a former MW who beat him with consummate ease. It was an impressive win. Evander was faded by then, but he still had a bit left in the tank. Ruiz was ugly to watch. He had a horrible style. But if he'd have been awful, the HW's who he fought would have all blasted him easily like Tua did. Yet they couldn't. So you have to note that he was tough and awkward.
He needed to either retire earlier or change his style to compensate for his age. It's a very hard thing to do though when you're living in the moment.
There's no evidence that Roy took steroids to prepare for Ruiz. He trained with Mackie Shilstone, who also helped Spinks and Hopkins move up in weight.
2 stone nearly and not a hint of fat ?? Nah, not buying it, same as Holy for the Bowe return..Packed on to much for it to be legit imo
Jones`s body was a lot more cut and defined than Spinks body was as he moved up to heavyweight, that`s a clue to him taking roids and not Spinks. I feel Spinks would have beaten Roy and heavyweight and Gerry Cooney who knocked out by Spinks, I also feel Cooney would have destroyed Ruiz.
You could see in the first Tarver fight that he was drained. He was absolutely exhausted after 7 rounds. He was much sharper in the rematch. He had much better preparation. Tarver caught him with a great shot. A shot that he couldn't land in their 1st or 3rd fight. Regarding Tarver's fight with Hopkins, Tarver's famous line of "You got any excuses tonight Roy?" came back and bit him hard. After saying that to Roy, there's no way he could have claimed that he was drained. Which is why he claimed he'd been poisoned. Obviously, most fans of the sport weren't going to buy that. Which is why nobody said anything. Personally, I think he may have been drained. And the reason I think that, is because I read an interview with Mackie Shilstone just before the fight, who was part of Hopkins' camp, who'd helped him add additional muscle mass. He gave a very candid interview where he said "We're expecting Tarver to be flat due to the weight loss" Tarver swears that he felt great in training, but he had no energy on the night of the fight. And Chris Byrd also said the exact same thing when he dropped back to LHW in a defeat to Shaun George. So I don't know. Like Roy, Tarver has a huge ego. Hopkins was great, and Tarver felt embarrassed by the loss. But it may not have been a case of sour grapes. He may have been telling the truth.
You've no idea how GG would have done against Bernard with an injured hand, or against a 25 year old peak version of Roy at SMW, a weight he's never even fought at.
