I always thought Pat did alot better than he was givin credit for in that fight and if wasent dropped in the 15th might have scraped by with a W or atleast a draw.
Pat loved that fight. He thinks about it all the time. He came very close. He told me that his trainer, Fred Wolfindale, asked him why he struggled up in the 15th. Pat knew things had to change. Not enough Cowdell on here really.
No. He was a reckless driver. He had an accident where he admitted fault and damage the year prior and injured his head in a car accident 9 days before the Nelson fight.
Looked it up to be sure I recalled correctly, and Sanchez did indeed fight Azumah Nelson at MSG. The Laporte rematch was also scheduled for the Garden. But your account of his death is accurate and I agree there was no conspiracy … just youthful bad decision-making.
I can totally relate, amazing isn't it. Looking back I can't believe I did some of those things, a pure miracle I didn't get killed
I think even without the knockdown, it was already sealed on the scorecards, as he was too far behind on the two cards that gave it to Sanchez. Kind of like when people say the Ali knockdown in round fifteen sealed the deal in Frazier Fight One. Frazier had already secured it on points before that knockdown (it just made Frazier's win more dramatic)
Pat definitely gave up the early rounds and had to get busted up a little bit before he started performing. I gave pat most of the middle rounds and felt the later rounds went back and forth. I will admit Sal was landing more of the cleaner punches though so I see your point. I can see it both ways and considering the knockdiwn maybe the split decisuon was fair after all.
I am inclined to think he was. But you never know. If you offend the wrong people, sometimes, things happen.
It's a well known secret that Salvador owed money to the cartels that they fronted to him (kind of like promoters do with their fighters). Unfortunately for him, he was milking all sides, taking money from rival cartels and getting mixed up with some of their prostitutes. As for the accident, we'll never know, but it certainly wouldnt be the first made to look like an accident
No more than James Dean, Jack Johnson and others who always drove too fast and eventually their luck ran out...
I still haven't seen the fight in its entirety. I just meant that I think Sal had the win sealed on the two cards he was ahead at even before the knockdowns.
If he needed a few thousand dollars in between fights, he knew who to ask. Everything else is history
