I don't think he was past it. He boxed great that night and lost a close decision. One that I thought he should have won. To me, guys that drink heavily fall off quick. Especially when they lose. Pavlik, Hatton and Kovalev. All known to throw them back, look great in one fight then the next they look horrible.

Does Alcohol really do that much irreversible damage to a fighter?

How about when there's some guys who still drink in between fights & still go on to have decent Careers?

He was still regarded as a P4P top 2-3 fighter, so I'd have to say no.

I'm not an expert by any means, but the guts I mentioned were well known drinkers and fell off fast. Alcohol can't help, that's for sure.

He fought excellent in the fight against the best fighter he fought. He wasn’t the crusher because he was fighting an ATG and Ward was doing work which Kov never faced before

I'm not sure whether Kovalev was in the peak of his prime or not. So I'm taking a neutral stance on the conclusion of this thread. However this argument interested me. Do you think a past prime fighter is incapable of being top 3 p4p?

I'll put it to you like this, had Ward and Kovalev fought two years prior to when they did, Ward would've got stopped and i'm a big Ward fan.

It's most likely down to alcoholism being synonymous with psychological problems. The booze is usually a sign of bigger problems, yet fighters in a good place can drink in moderation with no effect.
