Was Sonny Liston's jab really that powerfull or is it more of a myth?

Sonny Liston jab was a devastating weapons of mass destruction.

His jab was described as being like a jack hammer and Liston had to have special gloves made for him. His fist measured 17 1/2 inches around not 15.

maybe in principal, but it was the small, thick base, combined with his classic technique of powery/energ transfer from the hips to the shoulder to the opponents face


it wasn't only observers who praised his jab, but the guys who got smacked in the face with it

 

and Bugner's durability myth would have been exposed if he ever faced Wlad.

 

Tyson had a jab like that too. That is one of the underrated punches a prime Tyson had. His jab could knock you out.

Pound for pound it was a hard jab but not as hard as Wlad or Lewis's jab he was a small man compared to them.

 

I like Wladimir, hes my second favorite active heavyweight.

But for those of you who say he's got a better jab than Liston, here's what I have to say to you:

Although he ate a monstrous punch against the guy, some of his.. shall we say.. more remarkable losses could've had something to do with his mafia ties. We'll never know ofcourse.. but guys such as Ike Williams admitted to throwing fights for Blinky Palermo, I'm sure Liston could of done the same with the type of people he was hanging with.

 

Sonny Liston was good because he was bigger then everyone he fought and he had good athletic abilty. Sam Peter would make Liston look small.

 

Lacked accuracy

 

It was hard, perhaps the hardest of his era, where real heavies or superheavies were rare species. His jab would be decent but average today or in the 90's. Wlad, Lewis or Vitali's jab > Liston's
