Was Sonny Liston's jab really that powerfull or is it more of a myth?

And skill tends to diminish with size. So of the fighters you mention, the most skilled are the smaller guys.

So what happens when someone with extraordinary skill meets a giant with pretty good skill for his size. Here's where your formula breaks down and shows itself to be an entirely empty truism.

 

Cotto drops people with his jab, so yes a jab can beat the **** out of people. I've seen it in the amateur scene too, along with random times in boxing. I mention Cotto because hes the most recent professional fighter to have quite a few knockdowns with his jab. Did it in a few of his early fights, and then to Gomez and Clottey.

Liston's jab was NOT a myth.

Cotto being a converted left-handed fighter that is understandable; that would almost give me weight to the "Liston was left-handed" myth.

 

It really was that powerful. No myth. His fights are on Youtube man. How the hell can it be a myth exactly?

 

Lethal in every way: perfectly delivered, perfectly timed, with flawless accuracy, and of course with more force than any other heavyweight jab, including Louis and Wlad. It was an elegant weapon of destruction.

 

The same wlad that couldnt knock out a blown up cruiser? Come on guys this is amazing how fans are. Wlad is not terrible by any stretch but he isnt the best either. Is he an atg I guess. would plenty of heavies give him a really tough fight? Yes would he beat sum all time greats probably. But kan some of you guys jump off dudes nuts.

 

Not always do skills diminish with size. otherwise why would the best heavyweights allways be bigger then most during their time? Either size is so important that they can be far less skill or big men are as skilled or more skilled then smaller boxers.

Also big boxers may look slower, but that is just because they are big. Same way a smaller dog might look like it is running faster then a bigger dog. But when you run them side by side you see the bigger dog pull ahead with more speed.

5. Pernell Whitaker- southpaw jab, he beat many hall of famers with his jab and excellent defense.

7.Joe Louis- his combination punching knocked out many fighters, but he had a record 25 defenses of the heavyweight title, take away his jab and he would have been lucky to defend the title more than 3 or 4 times.


8. Muhammad Ali- generally considered one of the top few best fighters in the history of the sport, he beat Liston for the title, and coasted through many rounds of boxing without getting hurt the jab was part of his defense.

9.Willie Pep- its often overlooked because of his legendary defense but peps jab although not a hard punch sure piled up a lot of points during his career.

10.George Foreman- one of the best k.o. artists in history, its simple take away Foremans jab then you take away his k.o.s

Looked good to me against Austin or Jefferson. He landed jabs at will.

Thompson was not only tall but also a southpaw, hence the less effective jabbing on Wlad's end.

It's a TOTAL myth that size is an advantage. After you reach, say, 220 lbs, size brings all sorts of DISadvantages:

Slower arm speed. (speed + mass = power.)
Less leverage on the punches, since most opponents will be shorter.
Slower footspeed / defensive movement.
Less Aerobic abilities, thus harder to sustain output into later rounds.

And here's a news flash: A 220 lb fighter and a 300 lbs fighter typically (except for Valuev) have the same size skulls & brains, so the bigger guy isn't better at taking a punch. In fact, his slower movement means he's less able to roll with a punch.

The only advantage the bigger guy has is if he manhandles his opponent all night, or if the ref lets him illegally clinch & lean. (Wlad's sometimes favored technique.)
