SRL had all the "slickness" and speed of a Pure Boxer, the punching power of a Boxer Puncher, and the killer instinct of a brawler. Leonard was the complete package.

I didn't say he was, but a bigger case can be made for Pac than Leonard, I'll tell you that much. Pac has not fought opponents who had anywhere near the skill level of Sugar Ray's opponents, and yet you feel he's overrated. I don't get it.:huh

 

Beating Tommy Hearns at a weight he was nearly invincible, solving the defensive puzzle of Benitez and making Duran quit is enough to be considered an ATG.

BUT... The guy got a gift decisition against Hagler. A gift draw against Hearns in the rematch, and drained Donnie Lalonde to fight for 2 titles in differente weight divisions.
Then comitted a serious mistake by boing down again to 154 to get destroyed by Norris.
And then got KTFO like a bum by ****ING HECTOR CAMACHO!!!!

I don´t think he´s a top 10 ATG. Not even top 15.

Also, he was the first boxer with that "bigger than the sport" attitude, and also the first who changed rules for his benefit.

Even if he got a gift against Hagler, the fact remains is that he fought extremely well against one of the five best middleweights to have ever set foot inside the ring, and made the fight close enough for him to steal. Pretty impressive given that he was naturally smaller, and had only one fight in the previous five years.

The Norris fight was light years removed from his time and the lacklustre efforts that he produced in his two previous fights (Hearns II and Duran III) bear that fact out.

The Camacho fight was six years after the Norris fight, against a fighter who had remained active throughout that entire decade. It means as much as the losses that other all-time greats like Robinson suffered at the tail end of their career...(I.e. Not very much at all).

You said it yourself...The work he did at welterweight, against one of the deepest divisions there ever was, makes him one of the division's very best fighters, and stamps his place in my Top 15, and could slide him into the lower echelon of my Top 10 depending on my mood at the time.

Against Hagler and in the Duran rematch, Leonard danced and moved a lot. He did in spots against Howard, but most of the time, Leonard fought flat-footed, circled his opponent, boxed in a relaxed manner behind his jab, and then opened up with combinations.
