I think it was Basilio who said "when he died, I didn't give a ****. He was the most arrogant person I've ever known". He respected Ray's guts in the ring a lot though.
any one got a link for the documentary "The Bright Lights and Dark Shadows"? I can't find it in it's entirety.
If SRR had been getting the kind of paydays Mayweather Jr has gotten, he wouldn't have a tenth of the legacy he has today. Not a jab on either fighter just saying...
While 1/10th is an exaggeration, I agree for Robinson and pretty much all fighters of the past. They wouldn't be fighting as much if they'd been getting good paydays. Look at the HW champions (besides Louis) and how often they defended their titles. They got paid nicely, so they fought less.
Disagree. There have been good fathers and bad fathers in all time periods. Citing the time period doesn't give a person a carte blanche to do as they please. Sure, it was more common, but that doesn't change the fact that being an ******* to your family still makes you an *******. I don't have children, but if a teacher or anyone sent my ten year old home with a black eye, he'd get his.
There's no excuse. My dad was Robinsons age and he never once hit my mom, and she never hit him, and they had plenty of heated arguments. My dad's dad used to work him over when he was a kid, but apart from a couple spankings, my dad never abused abused his kids. My sister's High School teacher sexually harrassed her and my dad went down and told that teacher if he ever heard anything in the future, he'd go down to his classroom and kick that teachers ass good. My Dad was a badass and had a hell of a temper but he was not abusive. If this stuff is true about Robinson screw the *******,,,twice.
