Hearns was rated 25th in a list of the best 50 fighters P4P in the last 50 years by the ring mag in 1996, Sanchez was rated 26th, but should Hearns have been placed above Salvador on this list? Info given on Tommy H. Quality of competition: 10 Bouts v Top 50 fighters: 4 Why he was on the list: He was the most exciting fighter of the 80`s. What he could have done to improve his ranking: Won one of the biggest bouts of his career(vs Ray Leonard and Marvin Hagler). Sanchez info: Quality of competition: 8 Bouts v top 50 fighters: 2 Why he`s here: His victories over Azumah Nelson and Wilfredo Gomez. What he could have done to improve his ranking: Denied fate. (He died in a car accident at age 23).
This one is really tough. When I’ve done pound for pound lists in the past I’ve always rated Hearns within my top 50. I don’t recall Sanchez making it. So if there’s a separator for me, I guess that’s it?
Sanchez was perhaps “better” but I think Hearns was “greater” hence he had the stronger career. Unfortunately Sanchez has probably had 2-3 more serious legacy years ahead of him.
Pretty close. I give credit to Sanchez for always figuring out a way to win no matter how close/hard the fight got. Hearns fought too long and always took on the toughest challenges. Sal started to depend on his chin much more before he unfortunately died. He wanted to retire by 30. Tough one imo. I appreciate both and don't like to pick one over the other, it's kind of downplaying their greatness.
Yeah I think he’d have to be. Sanchez short career was tragic and not his fault. But regardless, Tommy’s career overshadows his in longevity, titles in numerous divisions and a longer list of wins over great men. I love Sanchez but Hearns is far too accomplished
