Was Tarver's KO punch over RJJ a lucky punch or a good counter?

Can you throw a good counter punch with your eyes closed?

I think so. Isn't countering sometimes not about seeing where you are throwing but simply throwing to a spot where you think your opponent will be?

I feel that Tarver had a plan to counter with that wicked straight left while Roy was in the middle of his combos and the eye closure thing was just a reaction to fear of getting hit imho.

Throwing a shot with your eyes shut and making contact is lucky.

So it was a lucky shot.

Sure. Same thing as when people throw counters with their head down. Hopkins-Winky.

Yeah, but Hopkins counters a lot with his head down. Does that make his shots lucky? I don't think so. Hopkins throws to a spot.

like any other punch it was a mix of both. However in this case it was more luck than not imo

    :good

Lucky shot or good counter... IMO, eyes closed falls within lucky shot.

But either or. Everyone can believe what they feel. Roy will still go down in history as the best of his generation. Tarver? :patsch

He was lucky to be in the right place at the right time. Had they met just a few years earlier it would be Tarver an that canvas.

Hopkins does not shut his eyes before he throws the shot though.

He still can't see where they are going though. I have several photos of RJJ throwing punches with his eyes closed. I can dig them up if you want to see them. I think everybody does from time to time...doesn't mean he got lucky if they land IMO.
