Was Tarver's KO punch over RJJ a lucky punch or a good counter?

Discussion in 'World Boxing Forum' started by klion22, Mar 30, 2008.

  1. I think Tarver was simply Roy's kryptonite & every fighter has one. Prime or not Tarver had roys number because he was a very vertical fighter, southpaw, good length & fast enough so Jones prime or otherwise would always have to come in as he did & have to get inside Tarver by which time Tarver would *BAM* coutner as we saw.

Hopkins done better because he was a counter puncher, Roy has only his speed you take that away and he is better than average at most hence why Tarver always beats him because his speed isn't quite enough.

The fact that so many people hate Tarver and are still voting this way should tell you something.

No such thing as a lucky punch in boxing. Its just the nature of the game:bbb

People talk of Rahmans 'lucky' punch over Lewis, well if it was lucky what the hell was Rahman doing in the ring with Lewis in the first place?

Yes it tells me that they are very f***ing wrong.

I especially rewatched it because I might've been wrong. But that punch in now way is a counter. He just bangs that punch in there with his eyes closed.

Maybe half of the people here don't know what a counter is (with all respect).

I watch a lot of amateur/olympic bouts weekly and there are many many counters that I see in those matches. But this? pff no way:nono :bart

Makes some sense what you say. The question should imo therefore simply be: Good counter or no (good) counter?

    Because it wasn't a counter-punch doesn't mean it's a lucky punch.

As much as I dislike Tarver, I have to objectively state that it was not a lucky punch. He only closed his eyes after the punch was thrown and many fighters do this. It wasn't like it was a wild hail mary. It was an accurate power shot that found its mark and effectively ended Roy Jones as a top level prize fighter.

He intentionally threw the punch at RJJ's head and hit him there. Not luck. He didn't trip on the way to Jones and accidentally hit him with a fist on the way down.

Interesting take. Slow motion at 27sec.

Hopkins keeps his eyes open, and he's aware of what kind of contact he's going to make.

Tarver had his eyes closed, didn't have a clue what was going to happen

Sooo lucky punch all the way home

How could it be lucky? It isn't as if he didn't mean to throw it or something. He obviously threw it, with the purpose of landing it. Great timing.

It shows Roy and Tarver exchanging and Roy not getting out of the way and getting caught with a shot he did not see. Tarver came down and brung his head up. He was not swinging for the ****ing fences. He knew where Roys head was he had his right hand in Roys chest before he lined up his left. Do you know what that is. Its called a punch, not a lucky punch and not a counter. But a punch that the mother****er did not see. If everybody that got caught at the end of a punch like that was ****ing lucky, nevermind shut up.

No way in hell that is a lucky shot. I don't even really believe in lucky punches to begin with, let alone when you can clearly see him moving himself into position for that shot.
