taylor was on his way to winning the fight, and was stopped by the referee with less than ten seconds left. that makes no sense whatsoever. I understand that the ref must protect fighters from themselves, but that doesn't apply when there's very little time left. unless the referee saw something that we didn't, like taylor's eyes rolling into the back of his head:lol:, no question, BAD STOPPAGE.

It's such a damned shame. I can't even watch that legendary nights. Watched it once, and that was enough

The referee's job is to protect the fighter AT ALL TIMES. Taylor was seriously injured (he never recovered from this fight) and could have been even more seriously hurt with another punch or two.

The referee is not the time keeper. He looks at the fighter and determines if the fighter, at that point in time, is able to continue fighting. In this case, Taylor was in poor shape to continue.

Had the stoppage occured with one minute left, it would have been deemed fair. With that in mind I think the stoppage was justifiable. However, it just doesn't sit well.

Within 2 seconds and Taylor helplessly dangling across the ropes, Chavez can still land a punch that might have more than just ruin Taylor's career.

This is boxing, and the perils are all over the place can can strike anytime.

Good, a round lasts 3 minutes not 2 minutes 55 seconds.

You're right that the ref isn't the timekeeper bit at that point the lights signifying that there were under 10 seconds to go were flashing. In that space of time Chavez would have been hard pressed to pull a gun from his trunks and shoot Taylor, let alone manage to run across the ring and hit him after Steele had wiped of his gloves.

This is one of those golden boxing debates. It pops up from time to time and will go on as long as people talk about boxing.

It's moved from the barbershop to the internet is all.

Horrible stoppage one of the worst in the history of the sport. There's a reason why people talk about it still today.

I agree with this. The ref isn't looking at the clock, especially when the two fighters are going at it like they were, the ref should have his full attention on both fighters. Then when Taylor gets up, Steele asks him twice if he is ok to which Taylor looks away. From what Ive heard he looked at his trainer who had jumped up to the ring, which according to Kirkland-Molina is illegal anyway.
