He was looking at what his trainer was telling him. He wasn't that out of it.

Terrible. Steele should have let them continue if Taylor goes down again then he could stop it. Oh wait 2 seconds left!

Steele was very clear in his questions at the end of the count--MT did not respond.

the main reason is that it is controversial. If it was clear which decision was better people would've let it go by now.

The stoppage was justified. Steele asked Taylor twice if he was OK, and Meldrick couldn't focus his attention long enough of the official to acknowledge that he was fit to continue. Taylor was unsteady on his legs, his corner was climbing onto the ring apron and the official had watched him spend close to three minutes shipping enormous amounts of abuse before being sent heavily to the mat with a crushing right hand.

Since I have watched matches where one fighter is allowed to continue and then pitches forward onto his face (Jones-McKinney)...To say nothing of fights where a downed fighter is immediately rendered unconscious (Mosley-Mayorga) or worse (Pintor-Owen)...And since Steele didn't have an exact sense of how much time was left because his attention was focused solely upon the fighter, he had to make a split-second decision as to whether Taylor could continue through the remainder of the round. Given everything that had taken place, he decided that Taylor wasn't fit- and as unfortunate as it was for MT, I really think that the decision was justified.

It was good. Steele gave his reasons, the only reason it gets so much flak is because its 12 rounds. Go back to 15 rounder days or even olden times and you wouldn't get anyone talking about that.

very good stoppage......doesn't matter how much time is left in the fight

mosley KO'd mayorga in the LAST SECOND of their fight....

Taylor already had a facial fracture and went on to **** blood that night....just imagine if Chavez hit him once more how much damage that would have done!!!

Taylor fought his heart out and should be praised.....but in all honesty, Chavez was the winner that night....and proved it again in the rematch.

The ref doesn't know how much time is left, he has an idea, but with so much going on with the count and asking Taylor a question TWICE,do you honestly think Steele after all of this is thinking about the time, thinking, "oh Taylor must be winning, let me hook him up and give him the win".

Steele's job was to make sure Taylor was safe and able to continue, steele asked him twice if he was ok, and he wasn't responding, its not that hard.

I didn't have too much of a problem given the fact that Taylor didn't verbally respond.

    No he wasn't.

He was still a top fighter for 2 years afterwards.

He moved up in weight and beat a solid, if unspectacular, champion in a division where he really wasn't suited for.

I've always felt that Lou Duva distracted Taylor when Steele was answering him crucial questions.

Duva's advice in the corner before the 12th didn't help, and later on, Duva and Team Taylor cashed out on him when he fought Norris. Taylor looked vulnerable in his title defense against Brown, and then they have him move up again and fight Terry ****ing Norris?

When it comes to the topic of Taylor, I am not a fan of Duva, to say the least.

The show just exaggerated and left **** out for dramatic effect.

The real story involves many more things that simply Taylor taking a bad beating against Chavez and declining after that.

Good stoppage, it's just a shame that Taylor was so beat up that he couldn't answer a simple question
