I do not even see how people still debate this to this day.
1 the ref is not the time keeper he was watching VERY closely to the fighters and saw Taylor being VERY hurt.
2 Steele asks Taylor TWICE if hes ok and Taylor does not even acknowledge the refs existance.

If Steele would have let it continue and Chavez would get the final finishing punch or 2 off that would have killed Taylor literally we would all speak on how criminal it was for him to let it continue.

When a fighter does not comply with the ref at all its waved over its as simple as that.
    People are idiots.

Its heartbreaking and i prefered Taylor over Chavez but its not Steeles fault that Taylor did not communicate AT ALL.

    Chavez got a gift.

Just one of the many he received during his career.

This is SO funny, people that SUPPOSEDLY know the game whinning about 'time left'. Who gives a fk whether there was 20 seconds or TWO seconds left? One guy said, "I saw the fight live and everybody was livid'. I'll bet he saw it in the us, and if he saw it in Mex. NOBODY would've been "livid". I lost money on this fight, and sure, MT was ahead on the cards but HE was getting fkd up the ENTIRE fight. Check out his career after the fight. he was pissing blood in the dressing room. When Steele asked Mel if he was ok, the SECOND time, Mel looked away and didn't answer. Some say, he was looking at Duva on the apron and was confused, such BULL****. Chavez gets BIG PROPS for pulling it out like the GREAT champion he was. And they DID fight again and I guess THAT one was stopped too soon as well. I remember when Big john Tate beat Mike Weaver's ass for 14 rds. and got ko'd in the last rd. from ONE shot, I guess THAT shouldn't have been allowed, either. I could never understand the rule of that a guy can ONLY be saved by the bell in the LAST round, WHY? If your ass is winning the whole fight and get dropped with 9 seconds left and can't get up, are they supposed to wake your ass up and tell you, you WON?

As to the fact, about the red lights being on, WTHFK? wHERE IN THE RULES BOOK DOES IT SAY THE REF IS SUPPOSED TO BE LOOKING AT SOME FKN' RED LIGHTS (UNLESS HE'S DRIVING)? If Mel had gotten killed, Steele was supposed to say, "I didn't see the punch, I was looking at the red lights, YEAH RIGHT. Sorry 'bout tha' caps, I'm still pissed at my Lakers, Kobe in particular.

Taylor can blame himself. The ref asked if he was good to go, and he was too busy counting stars to answer the question.

He may have been up on the cards, but it was his ass that touched the canvass. Good stoppage.

I thought it was horrendous when I first saw it live 22 years ago, and I still do. One of the worst of all time. Steele was Don King's man, everybody knew it.

If the same events that happened in the 12th had happened in the 8th or 9th, even with Meldrick being ahead, there would be no controversy.

Richard Steele saw a guy who had gradually been worn down, who was then knocked down hard, who then needed the ropes to get himself up and then was unable to respond so he stopped it. Those events should always lead to a stoppage regardless of who is winning on the cards or how much time is left in the round or the fight.

You can't expect a referee to let a fight go on based on anything other than the condition of the fighter. Any other factors are inconsequential as tough as that may be to fathom for some people.

    Great post.

I don't understand how people have all of these exceptions for rules.

When you get knocked down, the ref gives you an 8 count and checks to see if you are fit to continue. He does this by a myriad of ways. Asking i you are ok, checking your eyes, muscle tone, balance.

Taylor FAILED all of those tests. He couldn't answer if he was ok after being asked twice, could not focus his eyes, his muscle tone was drooping, and he was leaning on the ropes for balance.

No where does it ask for time, who was winning or what round.

Anyone who thought it was a bad stoppage is basically asking for the ref to ignore the rules in place based on emotion.

    Ridiculous.

It sped up his the process of his decline, but I doubt he would've been the same anyway at 147 even without the damage he took.

i mean he was damaged badly.

allowing him to take one more punch was deadly.

but i guess that 1 punch in those 2 seconds left on te clock prolly wouldnt had made a difference in the condition he was in.

    its kinda touchy.

but man he got beat up bad though

  15. Really tough to call because it was both good and bad at the same time.

Good because Taylor was ****ed up and ready to have the fight stopped.

Bad because if Steele would have let the fight continue, the bell would have rung right then and he wouldn't have taken anymore punishment anyway.

So my best explanation of what happened in that fight is that Steele was just doing his job, but was unfortunately unaware of how much time was on the clock.

There are some unanswered questions, like how did Steele not see the bright flashing light near the corner denoting that the 10-second warning had sounded, and how did he not hear the 10-second warning.

But I choose to remember it as one of the greatest, most dramatic fights I've ever seen and I take nothing away from Chavez or Taylor based on the result or the actions of the ref.
