I rewatched this one, and Snipes did have some validity to his complaint that the ref didn't stop the fight when Larry was down. That said, Snipes got caught flush with three whopping right hands by a still-in-his-prime boxer/puncher and the last one seemed to have seriously hurt him (he actually turned away from Larry). I seriously doubt he could have come back from it...but stranger things have happened. Do I think RS was hurt anymore than a turnbuckle-bouncing Larry in the same fight? There's the conundrum.
Hmm that's a good question, I've not watched that fight in a couple years but from what I remember it was stopped a little early although I think Snipes was getting stopped either way.
He was definitely in trouble...but in as big trouble as Larry during that knockdown? No way Snipes would have made it another, full round...if he would have withstood the shellacking in the corner (which didn't look good). I keep wondering if one of the things that decided the ref was the look in Larry's eyes. In both the Frazier and Snipes fights Larry got that murderous, mechanically bombing look (check out the infinitely condescending shove in the head he gave Renaldo right at the stoppage).
This is a particularly strong point. And yeah, Holmes was really dominating at that point. To me this fight was stopped only a flush shot or two, anyway. I mostly made this topic due to Snipes' gripes about the knockdown.
Nope. Snipes was gassed and taking a lathering. I don't think he won any rounds after he knocked Holmes down. It was kind of a similar situation to Holmes/Shavers II.
Good question. Though, in all honesty, Snipes was taking some serious heat. Should have gotten that 7th round thing right.
True, but it looked to me as if Mr. Holmes was getting back in full control less than a round after the knockdown. What heart. Snipes did, basically, get lucky. When I watch the fight it seems apparent that Larry didn't see that punch coming.
The turnbuckle altered the outcome more. If Holmes hadn't fallen face first in the corner after he got up (which kept him on his feet), we would've seen Holmes go down, get up and fall back down again (like Berbick against Tyson). And then he'd have to try and get up off the floor a second time. But where he got up, when he fell a second time, he fell into the corner and it kept him up. Had he fallen down twice from one punch, the referee may have stopped it. Or he may not have gotten up the second time before the count reached 10. Lucky break for Holmes going down initially where he did. If he went down in the center of the ring like Judah against Tszyu, who knows?
Interesting point. Worse luck for Snipes that Holmes had some of the most amazing recuperative powers in boxing history...and an indubital Champion's heart. I have watched that fight many times since starting this topic..Snipes was getting his head beat in at the stoppage. He even turned his head away from Larry and was defenseless. He could have been seriously hurt.
That was a wild night. I watched that fight with a bunch of friends at a pizza restaurant. I thought Cooney was going to kill him after watching that. (LOL)
I think Holmes goes in the first or second row w/o that turnbuckle. Try to name another fighter falling face first into the turnbuckle and not having the bout stopped.......
