Lyle was on his feet, and might have made it out of the round. I would have given him a bit more time. On my card, Lyle was in the lead at the time of the stoppage. Lyle corner protested the stoppage.

He got hit with 30+ unanswered and didn't throw a shot. Ali had enough time to motion the referee to stop it on two occasions.

Put simply Lyle was gone and approaching serious danger.

Lyle didn't punch back, he was gone after the right hand. And Ali hit him plenty of follow-ups. If his head was starting to clear at the time of the stoppage it was only because Ali was pulling some of his punches.
    Lyle should have punched back.

Ali had serious power when he put his weight behind the right hand and timed the shot well.

Lyle was throwing absolutely nothing back whilst Ali had thrown about 30-40 shots and landed about half of them...soon as the referee stops it, Lyle starts going ape ****.

What the hell was the referee supposed to do?

This question has come up a lot. There's no way that Lyle could have carried on. Ali starched him with as good a right hand he ever threw, then blitzed Ron with countless unanswered punches. Lyle could barely defend himself. Any competent referee would have stopped it at this point. Another thing. Numerous people point out that Lyle was ahead on points, but with no disrespect to Ron,it was purely on workrate. Muhammad was in one of his lazy moods up till about round 8.

Exactly mate. You could actually make a case for it being a late stoppage.

Lyle is semi conscious after the straight right, which was an awesome shot. It landed to perfection and the follow up was deadly - Ali mixed in triple left hooks and uppercuts which ripped through Lyle's defence.

Ali literally punches Lyle half way across the ring then smashes him with combinations all the way over to the opposite side of the ring. Fernandez gave Lyle every opportunity and a lot of refs could have stopped this sooner.

"Ali-Lyle" was a lot like "Holmes-Snipes" in a sense we, the fans, all wanted to see both Lyle and Snipes face down on the canvas needing medical assistsnce in the ring....

Looks fine to me. Lyle looked like he was going to survive the attack for a bit, and several of Ali's shots hit gloves and elbows, but several also kept getting through. He was sagging about, was wide open in the corner for four or five most shots and reeled back from that last left.

if it was stopped early then why didn't lyle punch back? If he punched back the ref would've done something. Lyle was obviously hurt and it was a good stoppage.

Only a sadist could have wanted Lyle to carry on. He was clearly out in the middle of ***** Street.

Unforgiven is 100% correct. Another unanswered barrage from Ali and Lyle would have went down, and probably out.
