Was there ever a greater waste of talent than Tony Ayala?

    Totally overrated.

Ibeabuchi was a far bigger waste.

Ayala would've got schooled by any of the above mentioned fighters, I think Davey Moore woulda beat him too.

A great fight would have been Ayala vs. Hearns or Ayala vs. Mugabi. All punchers. Even Ayala vs. Matthew Hilton would have been good. Ayala vs. Benitez would have been a boring fight probably..

This is how the General Works.

You'd never see a 'Masao Ohba was an unfulfilled talent' but the ****** and bog-standard banger Ayala gets an appreciation thread

    Maurice Hope would've beaten him.

You're in for a treat, Greg. Ohba was the Japanese Flyweight version of Salvador Sanchez, in that both were set to reign in their divisions before being tragically killed at the age of 23. Had he not died so young, Miguel Canto may not've had quite the reign he did. Ohba's long left jab would've prevented it, IMO.

and people say McClellan was a monster must have narrow minds, you cant judge somebody's heart for how they treat animals but for how they treat people.

He was set to beat Moore? I think they would have liked that, obviously, but I don't see it happening. Moore, at that stage, was a much better fighter than Ayala and, as with most bullies, would have left him very frustrated.

As for the rest...it's impossible to say and the reason why is a guy like Davey Moore himself. He was supposed to be the next star and if his career had derailed before the Duran fight, we would be sat here waxing lyrical about his fight with Kalule and his missed potential. However, we know that his career was massively affected by the horrific beating he recieved by Duran.

Why would Ayala be any different? If he went against Duran at that time, he would get absolutely battered and we would be sat here looking at him in a completely different light.

Good fighter, could have been something, but he never showed anything like the quality needed to mix it with Leonard, Duran, Hearns or Hagler. No matter how many mythical sparring sessions or broken speed bags you can name, will change that.

I would say it was Ibeabuchi and Jose "Maestrito" Lopez.

Lopez turned out to be a lazy pot smoker and drug abuser........he had exellent punching power and better boxing skill......He fought as a Welter in the era of Trinidad, DLH, Quartey, and Mosley......

Lopez was already headed down the wrong path of self destruction when he drew with Ike Quartey, and imo had he been dedicated to his craft, he may have emerged as the best of the crop of Welters I named above.

Ibeabuchi, and Maestrito Lopez were truly wastes of talent.......Ayala I cant say for sure because he never went past and onto the level of fighting true World class contenders.
Ayala was a destroyer, but who's to say he was going to be able to hang with the true skilled fighters of the sport.
