Was there ever a greater waste of talent than Tony Ayala?

Okay... Okay...... Tony Ayala is the greatest thing since the invention of the corn tortilla....... Gee, I am so sorry I missed his ring generalship and elite boxing skills back in 1981........ And those stomach muscles of his made Lou Ferrigno look wimpy...... Goddamn, guys like Ray Leonard and Marvin Hagler were shakin' like leaves on a tree in fear of Tony Ayala tearin' up the 154 / 160 pound divisions.....

There was also a guy from our local gym that went the same way as the guy from your gym. He actually fought and lost to Ayala in Italy. Pat was a promising welterweight. He was also a alcoholic by the time he fought Tony. He was drunk the night he got the news of his fight with Ayala. It was on short notice and he was stopped. He went down hill from there and he went to jail for breaking a guy's jaw in a bar fight.

Strange how he was set to fight the most dominating fighters in his weight class and yet some here miss his wasted potential. :patsch

Okay dammit I'm going to train:lol:. I haven't trained in awhile because of the snow but this thread motivates me to go to the gym once it opens today. I don't want to be wasted talent and let my natural ability for defense to go to waste. Hopefully I'll be able to spar...

Certainly wasn't the greatest but he was ready to enter the elites and would have fought wars with Duran, Hagler, Hearns and Leonard. Remember also he was a pedigreed amateur and had the warrior mentality.

He was a great waste of talent, but otherwise it looks like a mental case. Risking a career worth probably milions of dollars for a couple of bucks is more than stupid, and chosing to do it in your neighbourhood (where most of the people know and recognize you) is simply ******ed. To make the thing worse, it seems he made a habit of it.

Aside from maybe facing Duran in 1982 or '83, I think you are stretching Tony Ayala's bounds of reality too far....... Before going to Prison for a decade and a half, Ayala was merely looking at taking his first giant step up into the pro's by possibly fighting Davey Moore for the WBA title... Granted, Moore was also a novice, but he also won a world title and had beaten better dudes (Kalule & Guiden) than Ayala had fought up to that point... Point of the matter is, it was not certain that Ayala would've beaten the rugged Davey Moore in '83, had they fought... I thought that fight would've been even money in early 1983....

Had Tony Ayala beaten Moore for the WBA title in early 1983, Ayala would've been matched with Roberto Duran.... Again, no way can Ayala and his team guarantee a win over the '83 version of Duran....

See.. Tony Ayala had his work cut out for him.... But to think he would actually make it through the likes of "Leonard, Hearns, Mugabi & Hagler" in the mid-80s is really far-fetched and hard to digest without Alka-Seltzer.... I don't see that ability or likeliness in an overall sense about Tony Ayala........

He was a disgusting human being who raped and brutalized women. I hope he rots in hell.

That said he was a good fighter. I'm not sure how he would have fared against the elite. He was easy to hit and not the most mobile fighter but he had a monstrous left hook.

I saw him fight in Tampa. He was impressive but I wondered how he would do against a big puncher like a Mugabi or Hagler. He was there to be hit.

they could have been so much more one needed the right handlers the other a ****ing brain...though one got paid Millions and the other did too and won multiple titles they again could have done so much more

Aaron Pryor is my # 1 who knows what Ayala would have done but Pryor was a great in the making drugs deystroyed that career.
