Was there ever a greater waste of talent than Tony Ayala?

The really sad thing is, he had assaulted another woman at a drive in prior to that 1983 case. Because of his status as a boxing prospect, he was given probation in that case and was therefore free to **** somebody else. Like you said, a definite mental case.

I think the case can easily be made that Ike was the better prospect of the two. Ike's wins over Byrd and Tua certainly are more impressive than any win on Ayala's record, and they had roughly the same number of pro fights before going to jail.

I do agree that Ayala was a great prospect, and certainly a wasted talent.

WTF? Ike Ibeabuchi was indeed another waste of talent, but he at least did more than Ayala did in his career...... Ike's wins over "Tua & Byrd" were legit wins...... Good wins..... Needed wins........ No doubt.....

Right around that time Duran was getting beat by Kirkland Laing. Most likely Ayala would have taken him and in a spectacular fashion. Duran was NOT on top of his game.

And yes, of course Ayala is a piece of ****. It doesn't excuse anything, but I've read some stuff about how the Ayala household was run, and it's like something out of the Shining. I'm not sure ANYONE could come out of that situation whole. Certainly none of the Ayala brothers did. That said, I'm not sure that would make much of a difference to the women that he brutalized.

Keep in mind that Leonard, Heards, Mugabi and Hagler (and Hearns) didn't make it through that list without being beaten. He would have at least been competitive and would have created promotional drama for each event.

While he was one of my favourite fighters he also was soundly defeated by Reggie Johnson.I think being a contender was the limit for the kid.
Hope he wins his battle with AIDS.

Good post. Lopez may ceratinly have been the biggest waste of talent. Apparently he just didn't care, if I recall correctly, wasn't he a "big" welterweight?

Tony A. is vastly overrated. I think he was scheduled to face Duran in the fall of the year his troubles finally toppled him. Duran would have mugged him, KOed him and possibly molested him in the ring.

Point is, it would have been one hell of a fight for as long as it lasted.

Think so? He was def beat by Reggie Johnson but a lot of people don't realize how good a fighter Johnson was...him getting embarrassed by Roy kind of tainted his credentials. That being said I don't think that loss should have swayed people in to wondering how far he could have gone...how many world champs have 1 loss or more on their record before going on to be great, many. In any case, Parks was a very athletic, explosive and mean guy in the ring with skills to match.

    Mighty Mouse,

Outta the four guys that I mentioned in my statement, only John Mugabi was the guy who was slightly below par in terms of becoming great... "Leonard, Hearns & Hagler" all fit well into the mold of greatness; Mugabi does NOT!!

STILL! Based on Mugabi's thrilling "Kill or be Killed" approach, along with his power at 154 to 160 pounds, I'd even make him a favorite over Tony Ayala in 1983 or so, had T.A. remained active in the ring...... Mugabi had lotsa' flaws.......

Ayala has NO CHANCE against "Leonard, Hearns or Hagler." NONE!!:verysad
