Reminiscing overnight with @JohnThomas1 about a former poster on here who went by the name of Perry or Houdini. A remarkable poster with utter conviction in his opinions but what was most memorable was his tendency to break off into romanticised accounts of his own extraordinary physical prowess.

To get the full impact of his post, Perry was a mature poster and, as JT says, 'quite knowledgeable but a pompous ass who you were usually laughing at, not with.'. He never betrayed any notion of having a sense of humour or irony and then, one day - a propos nothing - posted the following.

    Perry -

"I remember when I had my own boxing gym in the garage in my late teens early 20's. My heavy bag was 125 pounds and I would hit it non stop in 30 minute increments alternating between bobbing and weaving under and around the bag and coming up with punches and moving side to side jabbing and throwing combos in full Ali mode. Then skipping rope 10,000 times until I was standing in a puddle of sweat and finishing the workout with a 5 mile run. 3-4 times a week I would visit a gym to lift mostly shoulder, back and leg work. Funny thing is that I would finish off each workout running full bore on their commercial treadmills. It was quite a sight with the machine screeching at its highest speed and me running at top speed. I would sometimes gather a small crowd. Several times the treadmills broke down under the stress!"

It is JT's favourite post ever and certainly one that I always remember above any other.

So, to cheer us up, I wondered if anyone else remembers this nugget of pure 48 carat comedy pork and cares to share a word or two in memory or if there was another post in the anals (sic: nod to Perry with that misspelling. Man liked detail.) of the board that can stand proudly alongside this monument to imagination that anyone would like to dig back out?

boomer-tier post it was, I bet I had more speed and explosiveness than him when I was first starting to box

I’d need more examples to string together so I could get the full picture of who the man was, or thought he was. I like what I see, but I want more.

Man if only time travel becomes possible in my lifetime. First place I’m going is back in time to that dusty gym in Perry’s garage to witness him clocking that treadmill. I may even bottle some of that puddle of his sweat and make my fortune selling it as a powerful aphrodisiac in the present.

For someone who professed to be all knowing, Perry never learnt how to use the quote function.

He attempted to post a link one day but gave up after 3 seperate thread attempts.

Of course, you had to live through those times to fully understand.

He has been involved in boxing since 1971....sadly no-one here believed that.

    Study up!

Let's not forget the time he told us that the heavyweight champion was master of all men!

This is lazy but I'm copying and pasting my mental image of earlier on from the thread I mentioned. I couldn't get the thought of Perry running on after the treadmill had given up the ghost out of my head. This thought has had me chuckling all morning. It might have more resonance for those who witnessed Perry and were told to 'study up'. Anyway, here goes...

Sorry. Gotta share my mental image of Perry carrying on at full pelt after the treadmill has died. What would be in his way as he carried on at 30mph over the edge of the machine?

I've got an image of him faceplanting a giant mirror that would do Tom and Jerry proud.

This is it. Those who knew him and lived the week to week posts and debates were treated to one of the greatest moments in boxing forum history. God only knows how long he had been waiting to unveil this gem on us. I can almost picture him almost peeing himself as he typed it out, spittle flying everywhere. Within a week numerous online dictionaries simply had a picture of Perry's watch (on hairy wrist) avatar under the word "ego". A picture told 1000 words.

In the general forum their was a character known as Blizzy Blizz. He started a thread about how his mom worked at a department store when he was a kid and Ali would come by and she would go home and tell him what really big hands Ali had.
This thread caught fire with jokes towards Blizzy. I routinely contributed to thread myself which I normally don’t, when it strays too far away from boxing but it was so hilarious I couldn’t resist. My side would hurt from laughing as I typed away about Ali’s big hands and his mom. The thread went for like a 100 pages and weeks then it vanished. I guess the mods figured Blizzy had suffered enough. Comedy gold.
