He wasn't bad, but Benitez was the best pure boxer.

He may well have been, yeah. Hagler? What a weird pick. Even Leonard was more a mixture of boxer-puncher. Hearns was the purer boxer.

Exactly...maybe the 70's too. This is a guy that used to fight off his back foot moving away, countering, slipping, switching from Orth to South in the middle of exchanges. Watch his fight against Briscoe. He looked like Robinson against Lamotta.

Then for me it is Benitez. Wilfred had to box his way to survive against Hearns and Leonard and Duran. He no serious KO power. He was all slick and move. He was beautiful. Then Sanchez. Graceful feet, slick upperbody movement, 1-2, move, hooks when needed. Perfect.

    Certainly in the top 5.

McCallum and Curry deserve a mention.

Hagler was a boxer puncher pure an simple. Certainly not the best pure boxer of the 80's. U guys have to b joking or r very limited in who u watched back in the 80's.
    Hearns
    Benitez
    Roman
    McCallum
    Davila
    Ricardo Lopez
All were better pure boxers and I haven't even begun to think hard about this yet.

You might want to watch Hagler-Antuofermo II.

Hagler is a one of a kind who boxed on even terms with Duran and then decided to turn up the heat on him and close the show strong. Hagler made the decision later in his career to brawl with guys who had speed and youth on their side.

    Hagler had better than Hearns:

    Footwork
    Balance
    Headmovement
    Parrying
    Ducking
    Blocking
    Jab
    Countering

Hagler could box just as well from Southpaw as Orthodox. Watch the Sibson fight. Hagler picked this guy a part from the outside and once he knew he had the fight...he went in the KO'ed him. Halger boxed with Leonard on even terms.

If you watch Hagler the contender in the 70's you will see him at his best boxing.

You know...I cannot think of anyone but Robinson who I pick to Outbox Tommy at those weights. Hearns was a beast...Leonard was crazy to take him on....and punch with him.

Leonard haters have got to be crazy themselves.

Definitely one of them. Not sure whether he's top of the heap, though. Will have a ponder.
