Leonard was moving laterally alot in his first fight with Hearns. In turn, Hearns was propinating Leonard a boxing lesson behind the jab. Leonard was fast, young, and mobile enough to avoid the type shots that a much older Duran could not avoid. Dont forget that an older Leonard, still fast but not as fast went down twice against Hearns in their rematch. In either fight if Leonard does'nt constantly circle around the ring lateralling away from Hearns, he'd have met the same fate as Duran and Cuevas.
You make an interesting point. Against Ray , Ray made it a point to back Hearns up which took away from Hearns's power. Ray was no ordinary fighter . Ray is also taller then Duran. Duran was not alway in shape when he stepped in the ring, and when he Fought Hearns he was not in the best of shape. Duran was not able to back Hearns up which proved to be his undoing . But to Hearns credit Duran never asked for a rematch. Hagler was almost KOed by Hearns but he like Ray did, did not let Hearns move him backwards. Moral of this story, if a young Hearns moved any fighter backwards it was going to be a short night for the fighter going backward.
Hearn's punching power wasn't overrated.... but when you try knocking out Hagler, you end up breaking your own hand.
Madmanc, you know jack**** about hearns power. He polexed cuevas & duran brutally gtfo with the nonsense!
He had one punch ko power especially with that big right hand. He carried one punch power from welter up to cruiser and thats a feat all in of its own. One of the hardest p4p punchers of all time and an ATG. What next JULIAN JACKSON WAS FEATHER FISTED???????
Im certain he was vote one of the ring magazines greatest punchers. This was in a an old edition of the ring magazine, which i have in my archives somewere at home!
