Berbick was a real strong guy, decent fighter. But he caught Tate and Page at the right time, and though losing to Snipes is nothing to be ashamed about, probably cost himself his second title shot for about 2 or 3 years.
Berbick was very strong, awkward and in good shape, hes was also a very rough tough dude. He wasn't the must skilled boxer but on a given night he could hold his own and even upset some very good fighters. His win over Pinklon Thomas, giving Holmes a good go in his prime and whooping John Tate show that. Berbick was a very solid pro who'd have some good wins and bad losses in any era you put him in.
Bummy is right. None of those guys were great or very good. They were good but flawed. That's why so many were able to steal wins off each other. Drugs played apart, lack of discipline and just lack of elite level talent to have a dominant champion. Tyson came along a class above all of them and whipped the lot.
Haven't seen the fight since it happened. However, at the time, I too thought Berbick deserved the verdict. My curiosity is piqued now and I'd like to rewatch it.
I find it hard to believe that you were so certain Mosley was going to beat Margarito. Yes, I'll agree that the odds were off(4-1), but the pick had more to do with the obvious value than any real certainty that Shane would actually win.
Big strong guy but lacked skill. Completely barking mad. Don King said he was feeling low one night when Berbick turned up at his hotel room quoting Bible stories....he cheered King up so he gave him another title shot ! In his prime he was big , fit and durable and caught some guys at the right time. Led a crazy life outside the ring, kept being arrested for avoiding deportation then was killed in an attack by a younger relative i believe.
Seeing Larry Holmes doing his flying leg drop off a car still creases me up. If Larry had any brains at all he sure as hell didn't use then on that occasion.
The Tyson fight with that highlight reel KO has diminished Berbick's resume but Trevor was a tough SOB for many years, a sort of better heavyweight Version of Mustafa Hamsho. Very, very strong. A very decent chin. Good stamina. A mauler, very unorthodox. Hevfoughtba very tough fight against a prime Holmes. One of Larry's toughest bouts at that time even though he won big on points. He had to fight for every round. Berbick's biggest win was his absolute thrashing of an undefeated Page when Page was considered an up and coming superstar. Trevor completely overwhelmed him in front of the world on the Holmes ****ey undercard. I think he ruined Tate. John was fighting a very tough fight against Trevor but eventually crumbled and was never the same. From 1980 to 86 Berbick was in be of the best heavyweights like n the world. That being said he was a complete head case as well.
Berbick was a proper boxer. He had more skills than the following top rated HWs around of recent times: Haye Peter Chagev Stervine Pulev Adamek Thompson Byrd Aroela
In some ways, Trevor was underrated, but I think he's one of the few that is neither under or over, just about right.Amazing that he had a span of about 6, 7 good years.
