Guy was kind of wacky inside the ring as well as out. I remember late in his career seeing him fight Hasim Rahman & yelling at him during the fight. A tough mauler type but one of the 80's heavyweights, along with Weaver, who got the most out of his talent. Beat some good fighters & won a title without being overly gifted. A completely respectable career. Fought Holmes tough & pushed Mills Lane down after the 1st round. Guy was nuts but pretty good. I remember watching the Tyson fight & thinking he might win!! He looked pretty menacing in his competing black trunks. He came off as arrogant & I thought he might win. I hadn't seen much Tyson at that point. I've watched a few rounds of the Ali fight & Berbick went at him pretty hard.
No. His best wins were over Tate, Page and Thomas and none of those three fought well when he fought them. Tate was damaged goods, Page fought one of his worst fights during his prime, and Thomas appeared to have aged overnight since the Weaver fight. Plus Berbick lost to cruiserweight S.T. Gordon who was really mediocre at heavyweight and Renaldo Snipes. And he was starched by Bernardo Mercardo.
Outside Tyson and Holmes, among the 1980s heavyweight belt holders Berbick, Page and Witherspoon Proberbly had the most wins over rated guys. People want to remember Berbick as a two round victim at world level but within his own era he stands out. More so than Dokes or Tubbs ever did, especially on paper. Berbick even remained a handfull untill he retired.
