Of course he's up there. The Ruiz and Moorer knockouts alone should cement his position in the upper echelon of world class HW punchers. Add in the Wilson, Izon, and Maskaev stoppages and it's hard to argue that he isn't at least top five. Yet boxing fans would rather nominate guys like Max Baer and Earnie Shavers over him, because, y'know, that's the done thing to do in boxing. No critical thinking skills whatsoever.
It's about the most perfect example of a one hit knockout you can get. Absolutely no damage done before the shot lands, then boom, Wilson is out cold and isn't getting up. This from a man who, only two fights before, had taken the best a prime Shannon Briggs could dish out and KOed him in three.
Lennox Lewis>Tua Tommy Morrison>Tua Ron Lyle>Tua Frank Bruno=Tua And that's about where he should be.
I think you left off Marciano, Dempsey, Moore and Curtis Shepperd. I assume Two Ton Toney Galento and Luis Firpo also warrant a mention.
How do we explain Max Holloway? Dude is lanky as hell but still has a super tough skull. Maybe it's the English ancestry?
From memory i couldn't find the article again that Lou Duva trained HW definitely lifted weights. Andrew Golota could bench press 350 lbs. David Tua squat 440 lbs. Didn't say how much he bench press.
The Moorer knockout sticks in my mind because he used his right hand and it was incredibly quick. Usually it was the left hook that did the damage. Tua must of worked very hard in the gym to develop such lethality. He also which has been mentioned many times before as being able to carry his power late which I think is something you develop by working hard in the gym. He had a lot of strength endurance.
Tua had legs that could squat 300+ kgs if he focussed solely on bringing his squat up and nothing else. Its of my opinion that he could of represented NZ in rugby, league, powerlifting or weightlifting because of the natural power he had. He chose boxing and no disrespect to the other sports because they are very tough but boxings tougher. And once you get to a high level it pays better.
joe frazier could barely put 140lbs over his head or something like that on superstars. one of the best left hooks ever.
