No way was Tyson Douglas fixed. Tyson was a crossover star not yet 24 years old no way you let him take that beating and risk future earning potential by being ruined. Ali-Liston most believe was not on level. Baer-Braddock is very interesting. Would not shock me if it was not on level.
Primo Carnera is another boxer who had some strange fights which were or could have been fixes. It's obviously quite well known about.
The fact that Don King and the WBC tried to change the result of the fight and deny that Douglas had won tends to suggest that the fight was 100% on the level upset.
As I have said with numerous fights (Ali-Liston I, Ali-Folley, Foreman-Moorer). When you throw a fight you don't: A. Get beaten to a pulp for 6+ rounds before you quit B. Nail the other guy repeatedly with your best shots.
Nope. One fight from that era that screams fix is Smith v Witherspoon. Spoon admitted he threw the fight to get out of his contract with King.
If you agree to throw a fight after a certain number of rounds surely it's possible that you will take a certain amount of punishment. That's usually unavoidable. Obviously if you hit a guy repeatedly with your best shots you will probably win.
Yeah but if you knock him out early or he knocks you out, it doesn't happen. When LaMotta threw the fight against Billy Fox he said "I hit him just a little bit in the first round and he started wobbling all over the ring. I had to hold him up, he was a bum."
If a fighter agrees to throw a fight in, say, the 4th or 5th, or 7th or 8th round, he might have to take a bit of punishment. That's just the reality of it. So for you to say "you don't get beaten to a pulp for 6+ rounds" is not strictly true, you might actually get beaten up a bit. Yeah, LaMotta said Fox was a bum. And he didn't hit him with his best shots, never mind repeatedly.
A sport book might have 42/1, but a private bet wouldnt give you those odds, 15/1 if even that, remember these guys want to make money not lose it, even a private book has to lay off on other books to minimize the damage, changing the odds yet again. But if youre talking about a 1/1 private bet then yeah.
There's more probability of Moorer taking a dive against George. Although I Don't think he did, just a bad chin. If you're going to dive, go out with one punch, or choreograph the scenario, you're not going to take a prolonged beating.
Nah.. The only way King would ever have one of his men throw a fight is if there was actually something to be gained by doing it. There was nothing to be gained from having the champion in his stable lose the title.
Total fix! Tyson's corner conveniently forgot an endswell and replaced it with a condom they found on the floor. What professional boxing team, let alone the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world, DOES THAT??? Face it guys, the fix was in.
Tyson wasn't boxing in that fight, he was walking forward swinging for most of it. Mike doesn't beat anyone good doing that. It wasn't a fix, it was just the power had gone to his mixed up, court-chased head
That pretty much describes how he always fought in fights that went more than 4 or 5 rounds. He'd wade in swinging the big power punch. But, yeah, he never beat anyone good.
