Same could be said for the actual Tyson - Holyfield 1. As I recally, Holyfield was a huge underdog. Some people were even afraid he might get hurt or something.
Tyson was a 2-1 favorite in '91. In '96 he opened as a 25-1 favorite but by fight time the odds were 6-1. I think Tyson was even favored in their rematch. Funny how people can be blind sometimes.
No. In 1991, it was expected to be a very competitive fight. It was what the boxing world wanted to see, like Pacquiao-Mayweather now. Although there were those who expected Tyson-Spinks to be competitive as well, I doubt it was considered as closely matched as Tyson-Holyfield was in 1991.
IT was expected to be somewhat competetive and Holy was considered a live underdog... But Tyson was still a considered the big favorite... At this time Tyson was already being mentioned as arguably the greatest HW of all time (along with Ali,Louis),almost unbeateable and was considered PFP the number 1 fighter in the world... The last time a HW has been considered the best pfp.
I believe Tyson was still rated below Holyfield in the P4P rankings because Holy was still undefeated. However, Tyson was the slight favorite. Ring magazine predicted a Tyson win by way of 8th round TKO and both men as the toughest opponent each has ever fought. KO magazine did an "expert analysis" between fighters, trainers and writers who discussed the elements that would decide the winner. Tyson-Holyfield was considered the first $100,000,000 fight and probably would be the highest purchased in the history of pay per view...even to this day!
It was considered a pretty even fight. The KO magazine analysis article Sangria mentioned had at least half the experts coming out in favour of a Holyfield win, if I remember right. Remember, Tyson had already been beaten by this time, and the Ruddock fights showed he was getting easy to hit.
Tyson was only a slight favourite, it was viewed as a pretty even war. Read my topic: "The $100,000,000 Fight", Tyson-Holy '91, Ring Magazine Tactical Analysis. http://www.eastsideboxing.com/forum/showthread.php?t=290176 It has hi-res scans of the '91 Ring Magazine article, which Sangria emailed me. :hat
Muhammad Ali was also underdog for the rematch with Sonny Liston ! You're right, people CAN be blind sometimes.
Actually, when talks were going on for the fight in this year, quite a lot of people I knew favoured Holyfield. I had it as a 50/50 one. Tyson had lost that aura of invincibility after being busted by Buster. In all likelihood it would have panned out similarly to their 1996 bout.
Tyson practically only headhunted in '91? :huh Holy would be frequently out-muscling Tyson across the ring in '91? :huh Tyson had low stamina in '91? :huh
