I remember reading a while back on here Dinamita rates Naseem Hamed's win over Bungu as the best of his career. I don't know much about Bungu apart from that he was a highly rated SBW. I was flicking through Thomas Hauser's "Brutal Artistry" today and came across this passage: "But after the Kelley bout, HBO became an enabler for Hamed. In the succeeding years, he fought two shot fighters (Wilfredo Vazquez and Vuyani Bungu), three guys who couldn't punch (Wayne McCullough, Paul Ingle and Cesar Soto), and one guy who couldn't take a punch (Augie Sanchez)." Is Hauser correct?
Why does it even matter??? Hauser appears to have some form of anti-HBO/Hamed agenda Dinamita is the resident know-all and so to see his opinion questioned will no doubt annoy him enough to pipe up on here again
How can someone be 37-2 and is on a 18 fight win streak had not lost in 8 years is a current world champion with 13 defences all of a sudden after losing one fight be shot??
That was an impressive performance by Naz (lovely straight left to finish it) but I don't believe it was his career best. Hamed of a year or 2 before would have dismantled Bungu sooner than he did that night.
Bungu wasn't shot but had beaten quality guys like McKinney almost a decade before fighting Naz, so was past his very best I still like the Kevin Kelley win as his best, getting up off the canvas in his first fight in the USA against a massive puncher was top drawer
A "massive puncher"? It's a good job there are know-alls like me about to keep the know-nothings like you in line. Kevin Kelley was not nor ever was a "massive puncher". Clearly the Hamed fight is the only time you ever saw Kelley. And regarding your first comment, Fat Joe has every right to start a thread to debate something I said. I believe Bungu was indeed Naz's best win when you take into consideration quality of performance and quality of opponent (the two factors to consider when deciding on a "best win"), and no I don't believe Bungu was shot when he fought Naz, maybe slightly past-prime but nothing more... ...but that is just my opinion, and it's no more or less valid than anyone elses. Fat Joe clearly wants to find out more peoples' opinions on the Bungu fight and I don't see anything wrong with that at all, why would he take my word as gospel?? So add a failed attempt to stir the **** to your failed attempt at describing Kevin Kelley on this thread alone. You're not too hot at this old ESB lark are you??
Who else put down Naseem Hamed that many times in a single fight??? You made a poll on who had the better chin out of Naz and Calzaghe, and a fair few said the Prince, so that means Kelley was a big puncher, his KO ratio suggests he was more than a decent banger By the way even if I over estimated kelleys punch it was certainly a better win than the bungu fight
No comment required from me on this. It is very apparent from this post that you don't have much of a grasp on this sport at all. Night dude :hi:
He looked poor against a much smaller Romero and had a SD at home before that, I dont know the details of that fight however...Didnt see the fight he had right before Naz but it was against a guy he had already beaten and who didnt have a very good record. Massive stretch to say he was shot but not at his best I feel. Still a great win though..Bungu had one of the best records at superbantam ever and Naz destroyed him. Still the only guy to do that before that fight or since. Clearly Hauser has an axe to grind...you could easily put a positive spin on those fights but instead he has chosen to put negative and broad spin on those wins.
Naz was easy to drop, not due to how hard he was being hit but due to the fact he was always off balance. Kelley didn't even hurt Naz. Nor did Alicea. Naz had an awesome chin, and Calzaghe seemed rocked by Jones. Naz had the better chin. Joe has a very good chin, but it takes a couple of rounds to warm up. It's his recuparative powers, and desire (even at his age) that set him apart from Naz, who lost his love for the sport at a relatively early age. Still, Naz was more dominant in his prime as I think he fought better opposition. For the record, I don't think Bungu was shot, he looked as big (if not bigger than Naz) and comfortable at FW, just so happened he fought someone who was possibly the hardest puncher in FW history.
