Butterbean was 32 and Holmes 52. And he still out boxed Butterbean and it got me to wondering, just how badly would Butterbean have lost to a 31-32 year old Larry Holmes? I know he'd have no hope of beating a 1980-82 Holmes, but just how one sided would the massacre be? Also, someone said to me that Butterbean would have been a dangerous opponent for a prime Joe Louis because of his right hand. I can't see it. Louis accuracy would be unerring against such a relatively immobile opponent who would be counter punched to no end and if a 52 year old Holmes had him gun shy, a 26 year old Louis would not be someone he'd want to meet in the ring. I see Butterbean being stopped in 4 rounds or less in a manner similar to Galento. Minus the KD over Louis.
Butterbean was actually 3 years older than Holmes. I remember him boxing in the 1964 Olympics. He was an 18 year old bantamweight then. He was known as Stringbean then. It was the Vietnam war that really messed him up. He came back a changed man. PTSD. He was unrecognizable. Like Marlon Brando, Colonel Kurtz, "The horror ..." .... and both of them started out so handsome.
