Was Wilder scared to fight Povetkin?

He did not leave England before the WBC called it off. They announced it on a Saturday and he left on Monday.

The question here should be whether Povetkin wanted to fight Wilder:

* Fights an eliminator in May 2015, wins in less than one round.

* Wilder fights an already-scheduled first defense in June.

* WBC orders open negotiations to begin in October.

* Povetkin -- who fought about 2 minutes in MAY, decides to schedule a "tune-up" in NOVEMBER. Could have fought in July, August, September or even October and still gone forward with a January 2016 mandatory, but takes this path instead.

(Oddly, his once-every-six-month fight schedule fits neatly with a guy who wants to cycle steroids between fights.)

* Povetkin's promoter sends an emissary to the WBC convention in China to tell the WBC that their man cannot be ready to fight in January, when the mandatory is supposed to take place, and that they can be ready by April or May.

* Wilder decides to schedule a January fight anyway.

* Fight goes to purse bids, Russians win, set it for late May.

* Povetkin tests positive for banned substance, WBC calls off the May fight date. Still hasn't ruled otherwise.

Those are all facts. Indisputable facts. So if Povetkin is so anxious to fight Wilder, why all the delays? Why can't a guy who fights in May be ready to fight for the title by the fall -- and decides to schedule a tune-up that forces a delay in the purse bid?

If he's anxious, why didn't his team do everything it could to comply with the January date for the mandatory?

The only two reasons that make sense are (1) he didn't really want the fight, which I don't really buy; or (2) his PED cycles are very carefully scheduled (he fights exactly twice a year on six-month cycles) and they had to try for a date that fits his regimen.

I said he "travelled". I never said he went to Russia. I can understand why he wouldn't set up his camp in Russia. That's just being smart, IMO. The UK was close enough to show his intent to fight in Russia. I was being facetious, when I said Povetkin should come to Tuscaloosa. Ideally, the fight should have been set in NY.
