Wasn't Alvarez v Cotto supposed to be a welterweight fight?

On the contrary, he will be in better shape for not taking off weight for a weigh-in. That's the point. You think boxers dehydrate because it's good for them?

Cobbler is speaking that straight bull****. Fact is if you are supposed to be an up and coming WW you should be fighting at WW, not at Jr. MW. End of discussion. If Alvarez can't even make 147 in his biggest fight, I do not think he will ever be an elite fighter because it is apparent that he does not have any discipline.

    Right.

Mayweather never became an elite fighter because he regularly came in two or three pounds over the super featherweight limit in his early fights.

Mosley hardly ever weighed in under the lightweight limit in his first 20 fights, that's why he never became an elite.

Pacquaio regularly weighed over the flyweight limit in his early career. He'll never be an elite fighter, no discipline see.

    You spastic.

There's been a few threads recently that expose the level of ignorance that many posters on ESB actually have about the sport of boxing, and this is shaping up to be another.

Alvarez is on the biggest fight in the last 10 years (non-HW) and he couldn't even be bothered to come in at the WW limit of the division he is supposed to be the future of? Alvarez's head isn't on straight. He won't be elite.

    excuses !!!!

did you guys even know that jose cotto has been fighting at welterweight for about a year now, so it aint like a lightweight is moving up 3 divisions, it's 2 welterweights fighting at a catchweight of 150...what's the big deal

even years ago there were a few times when jose came in a few pounds over 135, so i really doubt he can even make 135....don't blame canelo for this, he took the opportunity too just as much as cotto did.....

I think that Alvares is walking around 155-160 why didn't he came at that weight and make it a MW fight or even a SMW if he drinks a lot of watter before the fight. I got your point but I think that weight classes are created for a reason and should be respected

Why the **** would he want to trouble himself dehydrating to 147lbs when there is absolutely no need for him to do so?

That has nothing to do with discipline, that's common sense.

Serious question: have many months have you followed boxing for. I mean, this is fairly basic stuff that you have no clue whatsoever about.

You're dead right I mean look at Ray Leonard before he had his few NABF title fights which led to his World title shot. He weighed in at 153 and 151 and he certainly lacked discipline and amounted to nothing........errgh, actually scratch that.

Well at least that's what the great Sugar Ray Robinson did before he won the Welterweight title......no he weighed in at 150 lbs for the fight before.
What about a dedicated pro like Shane Mosley, who'll be showcasing his skills tonight ?, well he weighed in at 136 and 142 in his two fights before winning the IBF Lightweight title.

Oscar De La Hoya ?, he had never even made the Super-Featherweight limit once before winning a belt in that weight class.

Hopkins ?, 163, 164, 166, 165 in the 4 fights he had before winning the USBA title(which led to his IBF shot).

Roy Jones ?, 164 in the fight before he won the Middleweight title.

Infact anyone that knows a reasonable amount about boxing knows that fighters don't make title limits in non title fights unless they are very, very comfortable at the weight. The reason being that the last few lbs are always made through dehydration which isn't positive for the fighter and something they shouldn't go through unless they have to. It's common practice in boxing to fight 2/3 lbs above the title limit of your weight class in non title fights.

The fact people aren't familiar with this astounds me, but there you go..............

    What are you talking about?

If he fought a legitimate middleweight he'd be fighting someone who actually came to the ring at 170lbs or thereabouts.

    How is that 'respecting weightclasses'?

Doesn't matter what weight it is, Cotto is going to get KTFO anyway.
