at 12-0 wasnt that a HUGE step up to fight someone like larry donald? i really am suprised. thoughts?
yes, but given his natural talent, confidence and dominating perfrmances in those 12 fights before Donald I was confident that Povetkin would clearly beat him...
it was a great feat at 12 fights, but i suspect any of the 20 prospects would also beat donald convincingly. if he beat someone like valuev or peters i would fall out of my chair
Donald maybe old and he may have been smashed to pieces by Vitali way back in 2002, but he is still skilled and he is a big name, and by many accounts beat the elephant man after that, so for a 13th fight it qualifies as an excellent result.
just watched it. donald was there to fight , but povetkin had to much power/stamina and threw to many punches. povetkin landed some beautifull left hook upstairs and downstairs but donald took them well. povetkin also slipped the donald jab very well to get inside where he was strong. povetkin telegraphs the right still and needs to jab and set it up , or shorten it , but as a 12 fight pro that will come.
Povetkin looked better against Donald than Vitaly Klitschko did up to that ko over the American. Povetkin showed a convincing performance against a cagey and durable opponent. There is still work to be done, but he seems to be on the right way. I am very glad that Povetkin was forced to go the full route of 10 rounds. His stamina had been a big question mark. Not anymore! Very good and impressive victory for Povetkin!
Povetkin is a true fighter. I think the next fight for him should be Barrett. Monte is a good fighter and a player. Make it quickly because Povetkin doesn't like to **** about.
That is alright. I say make the fight. Keep him fighting top 20 fighters and eventually he'll get that eliminator then title fight.
It did seem like quite a fast leap in competition, but Povetkin showed that he was prematurely good, and that he could handle someone like Donald, even after having so few pro fights. And he certianly came through the test well. A fairly risky move that paid off well.
No doubt that was a big step for Povetkin. Hats off to 40 year old Larry Donald going into Russia ready to fight and never going down! Povetkin ain't ready for a title shot yet. I hope they don't rush him into one. He's got plenty of time.
Damn. it would be so perfect if Povetkin's next fight was on the Maskaev undercard. Donald was a huge step up. Figuring someone like Donald out quickly and shutting him out while looking so calm and in-control for a full 10 rounds for the first time in his career is a huge accomplishment. It's hard to make an exciting fight with Donald as your opponent no matter who you are, but Povetkin did not just cruise to a victory. A Barrett fight would be more thrilling for fans in Moscow, but this Donald fight was more important and beneficial to Povetkin's career.
I haven't seen that fight yet. Link? Any way, I'm not surprised Povetkin won by decision. What I am surprised at is that he completely shut out Donald. I was expecting the fight to be much closer. Close enough to give the hater crowd some ammo but AP put on a command performance.
