What guys do you know who could have had a grat career but gave in to too much temptation?? Drink, cigs and not being arsed to train did for Magee, bit of a maverick (*****) outside the ring, buta nasty fighter, mean streak a mile wide, good southpaw skills, granite chin His very lazy approach to boxing showed in his very lazy approach to fighting, dropping and hurting Ricky Hatton and Neary early, but breathing hard after every baseball like swing, sitting at the pub, rather than running, watching him outclass Jon Thaxton to earn his number two spot to fight Hatton might make mind of Augustus This content is protected This content is protected This content is protected This content is protected This content is protected
Lots of boxers who did well, could have had better careers overall without drugs/temptation. 1980’s edition: Tyrell Biggs Pinklon Thomas Michael Dokes
I mean, Tapia was arguably still great even with giving in to his demons (all too frequently)...but could've been even greater.
A thin and fit Andy Ruiz Jr would have been pretty interesting. I know people say he botched his camp for the AJ rematch, but I don't think that's true. He lost that night because he was fat and slow and he's always been fat and slow. Instead I would say he simply botched his entire career by being a fat **** who loved food more than achievement. If he had been, not just fast with his hands, but fleet of foot too, he would have been quite the force.
obviously not related to discipline or dedication because he was always in shape for his fights, but calzaghe staying with warren guaranteed that he wasn't going near the US. that was wasted potential, because he was the best fighter i've seen who actually allowed this to happen.
Luiz Ortiz should have done more as a pro earlier. Should have fought Ustinov at the time. Turing down Joshua to lose to Wilder was a dumb move.
Brook wasting too much time on chasing fights with Cotto and Khan who had no interest in fighting him. Also the stabbing, injuries, struggling with cuts etc.
Don't know about great, but all of the following could have been better. Others were great, but could have been even better. Page Thomas Dokes Witherspoon Cooney Ibeabucchi Tate Tubbs Tucker Biggs Ayala Jr. Sanders Morrison Tyson (could have been much greater) Bowe Leon Spinks Hatton James Toney Jeff Chandler Duran (huge drinking problem) John Conteth Aaron Pryor McCall Mando Ramos To name a few To name a few.
For some reason a lot of the great Puerto Rican fighters fell short of their potential due to liquor and yay... de Jesus, Benitez, and Rosario come to mind.
