I doubt such a fight will happen in 2008. Maybe in 2009 and I'm not sure if Lee will knock Pavlik out.
Stewart said that Lee will fight any middleweight right now:bbb and that they want Pavlik at the end of 08
Then he said Lee would knock out Pavlik RIGHT NOW. I just don't know about that ****. Lee sure as hell looks good, but lets see him step up in the competition a bit and we'll see.
Stewart obviously has a lot of confidence in Lee and rightly so but there is no need to rush things.Lee just turned 23 and a fight with Lorenzo would make sense
Conclusion: Andy Lee DOES NOT deserve the massive hype he is getting and he is not a lock to be the future MW champion like many people believe. Positives: He has a very good offensive arsenal and is a relaxed young southpaw with a trainer that can help him improve a lot. He also has great amateur experience along with good natural skills/reflexes. Negative (or overrated qualities): His handspeed isn't great and his power is far from great. He landed a ton of punches on McKay after that early knockdown and couldn't put him down again. His accuracy is pretty shitty.. he was missing a lot of punches when moving forward and especially when countering even though the guy he was fighting was extremely easy to hit. His defense isn't good at all. He's easy to hit/counter, he keeps his right hand low, and doesn't have head movement. He's quick and moves well, but his defense must improve if he wants to fight Pavlik/Abraham. Why hasn't Steward improved his defense a lot this year? Emmanuel Steward got excited and said some pretty big words there. Lee's gonna go from fighting some C- level local fighter to fighting Pavlik? You guys are nuts if you think Lee will beat Pavlik right now. Pavlik throws more accurate, MUCH harder punches and would take him out.
I think Lee will be Champ, but he would really have to show alot in several tough fights this year to make me believe he could beat Pavlik in the next 18 months.
yea, I'd hold off on a title bout until 2009. Give Andy some good fights in '08 and see how he looks, then aim for a title shot in '09.
I have seen Lees last 5 or 6 fights and his defense is normally good - he was careless here because he had no respect at all for McKay's power. He needs another 4 or 5 fights against better opposition before thinking about Pavlik. He is a big strong middleweight though.
I would also agree that his defense was lax because he didn't respect McKay's power. His did seem to be more mindful of defense in the previous 4 or 5 fights. To really prove himself on the next level, I believe he needs to fight a very good boxer with a solid chin, someone who could frustrate him greatly. That should be the truest test of his abilities past round 6.
He should fight guys like Zertuche, Zuniga, Sylvester, Duddy and Joval before thinking about Pavlik or Abraham...
