Subtle movement didnt waste energy, timing, accuracy, speed, power. Truly one of the greatest middleweights ever

And they also skated around on leather sole shoes with only Rosin on the canvas for grip! They were almost like ice skaters.

I would say Steele is underrated by today's fans, but I don't think that's the case. Most people don't even know of him. Definitely one of the all-timers at middleweight. Such a solid grasp of the fundamentals - economic/smart movement and footwork, distance and angle control, precise punching, throws a great variety of shots (and turns his body into each one), good countering skills, responsible defense, etc.

    Thanks for posting this.

    One of my favourite fighters

Steele's Resume (Turned pro at age 13)

Dundee KO (only person to knock Dundee out in 148 fight career, down 13x)
Overlin KO (only stopped 2x in 154 fight career, other was in 3rd pro fight)
    Apostoli KO
    Risko 3x
    Lesnevich KO
    Kreiger
Ceferino Garcia 2x both by KO
Gorilla Jones 3x (never stopped in 129 fights, Steele the only guy to knock Jones down)
    Battaglia
    Barth
    Berglund
Romero KO - had wins over Murderers Row members Archie Moore, Lloyd Marshall, Shorty Hogue

So 6 MW Champions and a 1 LHW Champion

Steele never gets mentioned in the top 10 discussion but someone like Hopkins is almost always listed in the top 5 now-a-days. Steele's resume makes Popkins look as pitiful as it really is. Another post of mine comparing some other 1930's MW's, the deepest MW era ever imo. Looks at Yarosz's ffs.

Good post bro. Hopkins couldnt hold a candle to steel. I always say Hopkins is the most overrated middle of all tim on here an should never be ranked above freddie steele

That guy is a ****ing terrible fighter, no defence, no upper body movement, no head movement, wild sloppy telegraphed punches... :patsch
Not a good example if you want to say boxing has regressed. Didn't defence exist in those days? Not to mention how unathletic they are. Thanks for the laugh :good

Love the Dundee performance because of the patience Steele shows in the second and third rounds. He picks his shots very well in those two rounds, counters nicely, and doesn't miss a whole hell of a lot.

Probably the best of the 1930's middleweights despite the fact that his career was plagued by injury (which were big factors in two of his later losses to Apostoli and Hostak)

Seriously, why don't these guys defend themselves? They continuously have a low guard and when their opponent is punching they just stand there and take the punches, they don't raise their gloves, move their body or use footwork. It reminds me of a schoolyard fight between two stiffs.
